A warm welcome to Silverlake House. We hope you enjoy your stay in our beautiful home in the Lake District National Park. We absolutely love the Lake District and believe it to be the most beautiful part of the country.
Here you will find England’s highest mountain Scafell Pike, its deepest lake Wastwater, over 20 lakes, numerous tarns and waterfalls, hidden valleys and beautiful and dramatic scenery at every turn. We have been visiting the Lakes regularly for over 20 years and we are still finding lovely places we didn’t know existed. You are in one of the few areas of our country where the landscape has been so unaffected by development that it seems frozen in time, giving it a unique character with its ancient stone walls running across the fells and its picturesque villages.
Silverlake House was built about 150 years ago in the grounds of the neighbouring country house called Holywath and housed the coachman and his family. Holywath has been in the Hext family for over 180 years, as has Silverlake House! Property in this sort of fab location does not come around too often and we were recently fortunate enough to acquire Silverlake House from the Hext family, but only after we promised to love it as much as they did!
Enjoy the rest and enjoy the peace and the beauty of your surroundings. We hope you fall in love with the Lakes like we did!
With best wishes,
Angela & Jonathan

The Lake District is a magically beautiful region of high peaks, open fells, lakes and sparkling rivers that offers some tremendous fishing amidst scenery that is both spectacular and intimate.
The National Trust handbook is on the book shelves in the living room. There are numerous sites to visit. NT and privately owned houses locally worth a mention are Dove Cottage and Allan Bank in Grasmere (Wordsworth), Hill Top at Near Sawrey and Townend at Troutbeck (Beatrice Potter), Levens Hall (south of Kendal off the A6, finest and oldest topiary garden in the world), Sizergh nr Kendal (excellent farm shop too) Brantwood, Coniston (Ruskin’s home), Muncaster Castle, Ravensglass worth the trip, historic haunted castle imposing setting, owl centre and fab gardens best in May/June when awash with rhododendrons) and Holker Hall in Cark.

Take the Gondola boat or the Coniston launch around the lake and get dropped off at the jetty at Brantwood. Visit the beautiful house and John Ruskin’s Gardens. Visit the craft shop and finish with more Tea and cake at Jumping Jenny’s café and take in one of the best views in the Lake District.
Visit The John Ruskin Museum and learn more about the famous Donald Campbell and the story of Coniston.
In the unlikely event (!) it should rain, remember waterfalls will be in spate and that is the time to go and see them! See the Waterfall book on the living room shelf. Even though we all have sat nav if you are going off the beaten path you often need the benefit of having the O/S map with you even if you are just going for a drive!
Just a 5 to 20 minute drive this very pretty lakeland village, which is well worth a visit. Made famous by its picturesque setting and its literary connections.

Ambleside is just a 10-15 min drive from the house. From the Roman Fort to St Mary's Church with its 180-foot spire, 'Old Bridge House' and the 'Stock Ghyll Force Waterfall' - bit of a walk uphill from the town centre is not to be missed, there are also various shops to explore here.
Walk One Don your walking boots on and walk up The Old Man of Coniston Mountain. The walk starts outside the gate. Go out of the gate of the property and turn left. Follow the road up the fellside. You will soon come to a waterfall in a steep gorge to your left. You can follow the track up to the Coppermines or you can branch left, either path will take you to the top of Coniston Old Man. Take the O/S map with you. You can achieve great views without walking to the very top, do as much or as little as you want.
Walk Two If you are not feeling that energetic, simply take a gentle walk up to the waterfalls and over the old miners’ bridge that brings you out through a farm yard and past The Sun Inn pub.
Walk Three Another gentle walk is left out of the gates, walk for about 20 meters till you see a gate with a bridleway at the foot of the mountain, walk through gate and carry on until you come to the woodland. There is a path that goes for miles and you can see stunning bluebells when in season. You can also find Yew Tree Farm about 2 miles along the path. Miss Potter was filmed here. Also in this area is the waterfall Tom Gill and Hodge Close Quarry. Again take the O/S map and take great care if you explore the dramatic Hodge Close quarry.

This is a must do. The most photographed spot in the Lakes. The walk around the Tarn takes about 40 mins and is on well made up paths and is fairly flat. Walk anti clockwise around the Tarn for the best views. There is a National Trust Car Park and toilets on site. It’s a 10 min drive. From Coniston take the signs to Hawkshead Hill and follow the signs to Tarn Hows.

Gummers How is a fell on the south eastern shores of Windermere. If it’s a clear day the views from Gummer’s How are spectacular. You can see the peninsulas Ulverston Barrow Blackpool Tower Morecambe Bay and as almost the whole length of Windermere. It’s a 30 min drive from Coachman’s Cottage. Its a short 15-20 min walk from the free car park to the top. There is an excellent walk in the Good Walk Good Pub guide South Lakes from this spot. If you fancy a drink after your efforts, try The Swan at Newby Bridge (5 mins from Gummers How), sit overlooking the River Leven flowing out of the bottom of Windermere. If driving form the west of Windermere drive to the Newby Bridge roundabout at the very bottom of lake Windermere and turn left to Bowness. When you see the sign for Fell Foot take the right hand turn after a few mins there is a Forestry Commission car park on the right. Park then cross the road and walk up Gummer’s How. If driving from Ambleside take the signs to Bowness then to Newby Bridge. Turn left at Fell Foot, then as above.
Another must do, the iconic Langdales. This is a lovely circular drive down the valley. It has fab views and passes a small tarn with a NT car park next to it . You could park here and walk to the Tarn (flat walk and short but very pretty (Julie Walters skinny dipped in it in the film She”ll Be Wearing Pink Pajamas). After the tarn and a short drive you pass a decent pub where you can sit out (weather permitting) called The Three Shires Inn. You follow the route and emerge back at Skelwith Bridge where we suggest you call at Chester’s where there is a nice tea room with a terrace next to the river and a very nice shop.
Directions Take the A593 towards Ambleside, just after Chesters turn left on the B5343 towards Elterwater and Chapel Stile. Follow this road passing Elterwater and Chapel Stile, past Old Dungeon Ghyll and New Dungeoen Ghyll car parks. Keep going past where the buses turn around, and when you think you have reached the end of the road and gone wrong, the road bears sharply to the left and begins to climb up the hill. Follow the road up the pass with its hairpin bends over the cattle grid and as it flattens out you will see Blea Tarn to your right. There is a carpark on your left. Park and enjoy the stunning scenery. If you want a walk from here Lingmoor is the fell to choose. Continue on this road passing the Three Shires Inn. At the T junction turn left to Little Langdale and stay on that road until it reaches the A593 again.
Remote western lakes very remote, beautiful scenery away from the tourists. Take a picnic. It’s an hours drive and well worth it. Wast Water voted recently best view in England. You need the SW Area O/S map with you for this one, don’t attempt without it!
Directions Take the A593 throughTorver towards Broughton Mills. Then follow the signs to High Dunnderdale then Ulpha. You really need the O/S as well as Sat Nav.
At Ulpha follow the signs to Wast Water or Eskdale Green. Pass over Birker Fell (if you come to any odd gates across the road, it’s ok, open them and close behind you).
You drop down into Eskdale Green, bear left and follow the signs to Santon Bridge, then right to Nether Wasdale and then right to Wast Water and Wasdale Head. Wasdale head is the far end of the Lake. Great Views of Scafell the highest point in England and Great Gable at the end of the lake. There is a pub at Wasdale Head.
Retrace you steps to get home. We often stop at the Bowerhouse Inn which has a nice garden. (Details in Good Walk Good Pub)

This is round circular drive over 2 dramatic passes with great views and a Roman Fort. There are lots of pretty places to stop on this route. For pubs see Good Walk Good Pub. Do not even think about doing this in bad weather!
Directions From Coniston head towards Ambleside. Now you need the O/S map, just before Skelwith Bridge turn left to Little Langdale. After Little Langdale Tarn turn left towards the Wrynose Pass. Go over the pass and at Cockley Beck keep right to Hardknott Pass. Stop and look at the fort, then continue down the pass towards Eskdale Green. Turn left before you reach Eskdale Green towards Ulpha and at Ulpha take the signs to Broughton In Furness. Pick up the A593 towards Torver and return to Coniston.

This is one of our favourites, made popular by the BBC recently. Not high and an easy ridge walk with great views of Derwent Water. Go through Keswick and get on the road running south along the western side of the lake. We park just past Swinside Lodge on the side of the road. Walk up the north face of Cat Bells and along the ridge. After the saddle you can drop down either side and walk back to the car either lakeside or valley side as you prefer.
24.3 miles - view on map
Keswick is half an hours drive. The northern lakes scenery is more rugged than the south. Market day is Saturday. As you arrive in Keswick take the signs for B5289 as you leave the main centre at the roundabout turn right signed Lakeside and Hope Park. This is the car park next to the theatre with toilets. You can walk on the flat by the lake. Then walk into Keswick town centre by leaving the car park with Hope Park on your left bear right under the underpass and up the road. Pubs here are rubbish, we go to Cafe Bar 26 which is on your left just before George Fisher which has the best selection of walking gear. Other shops worth looking at are Treeby & Bolton which has a nice cafe and Viridian Gallery run by local artists. Treeby is between George Fisher and the main square. Viridian is up the very top of the residential road opposite George Fisher.
28.6 miles - view on map
Shown on the map to the south east of Derwent Water. A very dramatic scenic drive with superb views of Derwent Water. Leave Keswick on the B5289 to Borrowdale. After 5 mins look out for a small road on the leftsigned Ashness Bridge and Watendlath. Drive up the road keep going and eventually it ends at Watendlath farm and Tarn. You can get coffee ice cream here and I think there are toilets too. Its a very remote peaceful spot.
29 miles - view on map
Leave Keswick on the B5289 to Borrowdale. You will pass Lodore Falls which may be worth a look depending on how much water there is around! You also pass the Bowder Stone which is worth the 10 min walk to it. Both shown on the above map. Castle Crag also shown above is a low but spectacular fell, and features in the Good Walk Good Pub book and Tom Bowker. It is definitely worth the short interesting walk to the top. When in the Borrowdale valley go to the Langstrath County Inn at Stonethwaite which is the best pub in the valley (lunch 12-2) but do soup outside of this.
