Off the beaten track and swathed in mystery, The Secret Holt is a romantic luxury self-catering cabin which truly makes the most of Dartmoor’s rugged romance. JRR Tolkien's family once lived at the owner's main house back along the lane, and one's imagination doesn't need to stretch too far to conjure hobbits, elves and other enchanting creatures when staying at this magical woodland cabin plucked straight from a fairy tale.
Tucked away at the end of a beautifully unmade lane, this cute-as-pie love nest is further dwarfed by the soaring Scots Pines that surround it. The whispers of magic and ancient folklore can almost be heard echoing through the forest....An enchanting Dartmoor cabin nestled on top of the world surrounded by woods, streams, moorland and rainbows; simply perfect for honeymoons and romantic self-catering breaks with a difference. Recently featured in the Sunday Times round up of "50 Best Cottages".
Bedrooms and Bathrooms
The folksy chic Alpine flavour which flows through the cabin is continued in the master king-size bedroom with crisp white linens and splashes of passion flower and honeysuckle. Stare up through the branches of the surrounding ancient trees through the sky light in the bedroom and count shooting stars, before being blissfully carried into a deep uninterrupted slumber. The en suite bathroom has a double ended roll top bath and heated towel rails offering guests a cosy place to pamper. There is an additional four-poster double bedroom perfect for use as a dressing room, or perhaps for the baby's cot. It has an en suite shower room.
There are a handful of granite steps by the side of The Secret Holt which lead up to the garden that sits above the unique cabin boasting beautiful woodland views across the forest. The surroundings really come alive in springtime when the snowdrops, violets, bluebells, azaleas, foxgloves and tulips provide a riot of colour, with the giant bamboos in the garden adding an almost tropical feel.
Relax around the fire pit as night falls in the woods armed with marshmallows for toasting, and a miscellany of fireside stories to entertain your beloved. Follow the stream on your doorstep into the woods to find the little bridge simply crying out for a game of Pooh sticks. The wooden summerhouse at the top of the garden is a lovely spot to sit and enjoy the magic of the woods in all weather.
There is ample parking for up to two cars. The duvets, pillows and mattress toppers are all filled with lambswool to keep guests warm in winter and cool in summertime. There is a pub just five minutes' walk away (torches recommended!). The cabin has a dishwasher, fridge, cooker and atmospheric real fire, as well as there being central heating all throughout to keep guests cosy in winter.

Property Owner Gemma says
Dartmoor is beautiful, even in rain the rainbows are magical. People come here to escape and recover in the romance and tranquility. It´s a joy to eat really well in all the local pubs. Guests feel they´ve been cradled in the top of the world and that’s part of the secret of the cabin.

FOOD AND DRINK
The kitchenette is hewn from an ancient – not just old, ancient – piece of granite, and the cupboard doors are fronted with tin wall tiles from the Empire State Building. Everywhere you look there is a fascinating piece of history to goggle over! Riverford Organic can deliver vegetable and meat boxes for creating delicious romantic dinners for two.
If you'd rather spend your self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you and your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).
The characterful friendly pubs around the area serve hearty home-cooked food and a good selection of local ales. The fine food and wine of Rock Inn is just a five minute walk through the wood. Ullacombe Farm Shop is just a few minutes' drive away and has a lovely cafe serving fine locally-produced menus. For a Sunday roast to write home about, try Gidleigh Park- AMAZING.
