The Property

Unique Beach House on Tankerton Beach in Whitstable

Inside

The Artists' Beach House is a detached clapperboard house built in 1906. Opening onto Tankerton Beach, the property is spectacularly situated in a quiet corner of the attractive and fashionable fishing port of Whitstable on the North Kent coast.

  • Style: The beach house has been sensitively modernised keeping the original tongue and groove in the kitchen and all the original arts and crafts detailing throughout, including the carved settles by the open fireplace and the galleried staircase. The interior décor reflects the beach location. Inside the house are collected treasures, books and art works including the 'swimmers' mosaic by a local artist in the bathroom.
  • Bedrooms and Bathrooms: Upstairs there are two doubles and a twin bedroom; downstairs another double bedroom. A double sofa bedroom can be made available on prior request. All share an upstairs family bathroom, downstairs loo and outdoor 'octopus shower with a view'.
  • For relaxation: On sunny days enjoy the 180º sea views from the sofa on the wrap-around deck or oysters on the beach. If the wind picks up, retreat inside, whether cosying up in front of the fire or relaxing in the spacious kitchen.
  • For recreation: Digest the stack of art books, set up the easel and set to inspired, as JMW Turner was, by the seascapes and sunsets. Or just relax on the deck as the sea laps beneath.
  • Practicalities: Washing machine, tumble dryer, washing line, clothes pegs. There is no freezer at the house only an icebox in the fridge. Parking for three cars with additional on-road parking nearby.

Outside

On a private sea road with a unique outlook, the house is set above the beach in wild woodland gardens, with elevated pathways and ramshackle steps. The property has a veranda and decking where you can enjoy Whitstable Natives (the local oysters) and BBQ as you admire stunning sunsets across the Thames estuary. After your swim there is the outdoor shower with a view.

Food and wine

  • DIY: Available on a self-catered basis, the kitchen is fully equipped and has a Smallbone Classical Kitchen in keeping with the original tongue and groove finish. Whitstable and Tankerton, both 10 minutes walk from the house, have excellent green grocers and butchers. Both have small supermarkets and Whitstable delicatessens, chocolatiers, gelateria and of course its famous fish market and West Whelks at the harbour and Wheelers' fish counter in town. Enhance your self-catered stay by adding bubbles and chocolates, a cream tea or fresh picnic from Unique Boutique.
  • In-house cuisine: Catering is available at an additional cost and is to be arranged direct with the caterers. We are able to provide you with contacts for recommended caterers on request
  • Eating out: Whitstable is famous for its restaurants. These include one of the 'UK's top 10 greats' Wheelers' Oyster Bar (The Independent); JoJos (4/5 in The Good Food Guide); the spectacularly located Whitstable Oyster Fishery Co, The Pearsons' Arms on the beach whilst harbour-side you'll find The Crab and Winkle and The East Quay Restaurant. Nearby are gastro pubs The Dove at Dargate and Michelin-starred The Sportsman at Seasalter. The nearest bar and restaurant to the Artists' Beach House is The Hotel Continental, a 3-minute walk away.
