Under the Rose | Luxury Self-Catering Cottage | Crantock, Cornwall

Under the Rose

Crantock, Cornwall, UK

Swathed in folklore, this enchanting 17th century cottage is as rich in fable as it is style. Purportedly once buried by a sandstorm lasting three days and three nights, Under the Rose stands in all its chocolate-box glory just down the lane from Crantock beach. Beneath its peculiar gable ends and Persian-style thatched domes, this self-catering hideaway is chock-full of charm.

If walls could talk, you’d be up sipping wine until the wee hours listening to all the tales of Under the Rose. Stories span from monks and dragon battles to sandstorms and smugglers; whose getaway tunnels still lay beneath the cottage to this day. Families yearning for a cool self-catering cottage, where the best of north Cornwall´s coast and country combine, need look no further than here. Romp through colourful riots of corn marigolds and poppy fields to play on the local beaches of Crantock, Porth Joke and Fistral by day, then collapse by the merrily crackling fire come nightfall.

Rise early and grab some warm St Agnes pastries from the village stores to enjoy in the light-filled kitchen-diner. Whilst in summer the huge French doors open up to let sunshine and fresh air flood in, in winter months this spacious room adopts a warm, atmospheric feel. For added ambience, the lounge’s woodburner radiates delicious heat, ready to be topped up with wood from the log pile and enjoyed with a glass of wine, or two. At night, this higgledy-piggledy seaside home invites sleepy heads to rest in one of the four bedrooms, including two doubles (one king-size) and two singles.

Rosemary fills the cottage garden with a heady paradisal scent at Under the Rose. Throw open the French doors in summer and spin between the hot tub and kitchen table laid with cucumber sandwiches and homemade lemonade. For families flying into Newquay airport, Crantock village has all the essentials, from fresh bread to fishing nets, plus plenty to discover on foot. Paddleboard down the River Gannel that runs along the east side of the beach, sunbathe in a sheltered fold of the sand dunes or take to the surf and ride the world-renowned waves of Fistral and Watergate Bay.

From the owner

“Having rented Under the Rose on many occasions through the years and now recently owning it ourselves it is a very special place for us.”

From the owner

We started holidaying in Crantock village over the last 30 years, firstly as a young couple, then with our two daughters and two dogs. The best beach in the world (in our opinion!) is a short walk away and holds many memories of the girls making sandcastles and learning how to surf.

Under the Rose was probably built during the 1600s in Crantock as the Hall House. Originally, the house would not have had a first floor, but would have been open to the rafters with a large fireplace and open flue. Due to the natural spring, the village was first settled by monks in the 11th century. In fact, the well in the back garden is fed by the spring.

The house continued to be an important building at the heart of the community throughout the following centuries. The outbuildings at the front housed a communal piggery. Villagers brought scraps to the piggery through the hatch facing the road and at Christmas, everyone was given a cut of the local pork.

We believe there may be a blocked-up smugglers' tunnel from the house to the caves on the beach, but we will leave you to guess where it is!

The property works very well for our family - everyone has their own room, the beds are super comfy and the downstairs living space and kitchen are great for family meals and spending time together. We also love the garden, hot tub and the proximity of the property to the beach.

Under the Rose is in such a perfect location! You have everything you need on your doorstep, pub, shop, beach, pizza place, you really do not need your car when staying here. The house is very comfy and the kitchen diner with the doors open is so lovely when the weather is good.

We absolutely loved Under the Rose. What a perfect family break, we are heading home so very relaxed. The lounge is so cosy and ideally separate from the TV space. The kitchen was my haven, perfect for cooking whilst the family spread out, and those special moments in the little breakfast nook drinking coffee in peace every morning before wandering down to the beach with the dog. A perfect slice of heaven for our family escape, we will be back! Thank you so much.

A cosy thatched cottage in the sweetest village, with a pub right on your doorstep! The kitchen/diner is a fantastic space to get all of the family together with those lovely doors opening up to the garden, the hot tub is fabulous and it´s great being able to walk to the beach!

A really fantastic, family friendly house and just a short walk to the beach and close to two great pubs! What more could you want? Spacious and comfy living areas, a hot tub and a fully enclosed garden, all in such a pretty little village. I immediately felt relaxed in the house and can´t wait to return.
