Cinnamon Cottage | Luxury Self-Catering | Higher Ashton, Devon

Cinnamon Cottage

Higher Ashton, Devon, UK

A traditional thatched roof crowns this cute-as-a-button country home, stuffed to the beams with chocolate-box charm. Cinnamon Cottage is a luxury self-catering cottage in the quaint village of Higher Ashton in Devon and, with room for six guests and two dogs, family holidays in the rolling Devonshire countryside have never looked so tempting.

With traditional wooden beams and mullioned windows, this 17th century almshouse has been beautifully restored to create a stylish self-catering abode with a welcoming ambience. Idyllically situated in a sleepy village setting between the Teign Valley and Haldon Hill, the Grade-II listed cottage boasts far-reaching views "o'er the hills and far away". Explore the wilds of Dartmoor National Park by day and return in the evening to rouse the ambient glow of the fire and breathe a bottle of red, later shared over a black and white film.

Revel in country cottage living with the added joy of contemporary luxuries. Keeping authentic features such as the natural wood and exposed stone, the owners have created a sumptuous Devonshire retreat. In the morning, pad down to the farmhouse-style kitchen, warmed by the Aga, and pour yourself a fresh coffee before plotting the day's activities. In winter, the living room is especially cosy with soft sofas and lit by the glow of the fire. When evening cloaks the cottage in a magical darkness, two double bedrooms and one twin are draped in soft linens, providing a sanctuary for all.

The cottage gardens provide a peaceful spot to recline during dreamy mornings and hazy afternoons; watching the white fluffy clouds pass by overhead with the melodic peal of the church bells in the background. In springtime the Teign Valley is covered in wild snowdrops, bluebells and daffodils and is a fantastic base from which to explore Dartmoor and the magical waterfalls in Devon. In summer months the beautiful South Hams beaches will prove perfectly placed for a good old-fashioned day at the seaside.

From the owner

“We hope you enjoy the relaxed and homely feel to our escape-from-it-all cottage, where farmhouse-inspired interiors reflect the rural setting. Don’t forget to pack your walking boots to ensure you make the most of the idyllic surrounds!”

From the owner

The house was probably originally built in the 1400s and it would have been built as three estate cottages, each as a one-up, one-down-roomed house. The kitchen has its original floor and the middle staircase runs up through the middle chimney. At the time, the cottages would have housed workers for the local estate, Ashton Manor.

We have decorated Cinnamon Cottage in a simple, elegant and understated way to suit the style of the cottage, but have added quirky art pieces throughout. We hope you fall for its charm as much as we have and embrace the local area with its plethora of things to see and do.

Guest Testimonials

Thank you for an incredible week. We got to celebrate my mothers birthday, a magnificent thanksgiving and the start of the holiday season here. Family from the UK (first time together in two years because of Covid), down from Scotland and our little family of three from London. It was a magical time and memorable vacation, reunion and relaxation. Thanks for a fantastic house - we hope to come back again next year!

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in this stunning cottage! The kitchen seemed to be the soul of the home and we loved cooking there. We enjoyed our time taking little walks and it felt so lovely to return to such a cosy space. Thank you for the books and toys that kept our 3-year-old daughter entertained! We´ve had a truly relaxing holiday during the half-term break. Thank you once again.

Well, what a gem of a house! Never have we stayed anywhere that felt so much like coming home. It felt like we´d always lived here and it´s a wrench to leave. Highlights of the week were afternoon tea at Bovey Castle, the falls at Canonteigh, the caves at Kents Cavern, breakfast at The Cafe on the Green in Widecombe, and stomping up Hay Tor. A holiday that ticked all the boxes, thank you!

Thank you so much for a fantastic week in this lovely cottage. We were very grateful for the hamper packed full of goodies upon arrival, with the radio and lights on and fresh flowers, it felt so homely as soon as we walked through the door. We have all enjoyed exploring an area of Devon we hadn´t previously visited. Thank you for letting us stay!

We have had a lovely week at Cinnamon Cottage with lots of sun. We found the cottage so peaceful, restful and beautifully positioned. We tried out several of the walks which were just lovely and sampled some delicious pub meals. We felt very comfortable in the cottage, thank you so much for the welcome hamper! We were all very happy here. Thank you.

What a beautiful cottage! We loved being able to call this our ´Devon home´ for a week. Thank you for the attention to detail in all aspects, from the hamper to the wonderfully fluffy towels - we would love to know the secret! Thank you for helping to make our first family holiday amazing!

We´ve had a wonderful week relaxing in this beautiful cottage. The fairy lights and Aga in the kitchen, the open fire in the lounge and the character throughout all make it feel very homely. Cinnamon Cottage is in a great location for exploring Devon and walking in Dartmoor. It´s been a lovely break - we´re sad to be leaving.

Thank you. We have stayed in many lovely cottages but this one is magical. We ate all of the hamper goodies, and discovered Ullacombe Farm Shop! The Aga is lovely and cosy in the mornings, even with the stable door left open for Hamish, our Retriever. We walked in the forest, and loved Salcombe the best. The local pub there is good too! We hope to return in the near future.

We´ve had a wonderful time staying in your gorgeous cottage, the children found it magical! We particularly appreciated the very homely welcome on arrival. It would be lovely to visit again!

Thank you so much for having us, we could not have wished for a better cottage to spend our honeymoon in - what a wonderful part of Devon! We must also thank you for the bubbles, very thoughtful, it went down a treat! We have enjoyed several long walks on Dartmoor with Bertie Dog and visited some lovely villages. Perfect!

We were looking forward to our stay at Cinnamon Cottage, and the reality was even better than we had hoped! We loved the care and thought that had gone into the cottage and our arrival. The welcome hamper was also much appreciated and we loved the log fire! It was a perfect base for our Famous Five style weekend, and a fabulous treat for my sister-in-law’s 50th Birthday. Thank you so much.

It is a sheer delight to walk into a cottage where you are made to feel utterly welcome. From the fully stacked tea jar, to the fluffy towels and sheepskin rugs, the attention to detail is second to none. We have travelled and lived around the world and we love your home. Life was extremely hectic in the weeks running up to our stay so we really appreciated the welcome calls and your caring thoughtfulness around the cottage. Our daughters were very excited about your apple tree and the cuddly toys. Thank you for such a lovely and peaceful time.

We had a fantastic stay in your lovely cottage. The Christmas decorations and welcome basket made us feel straight at home. We loved just sitting by the fire and chilling out. Thank you so much for letting us stay, we loved it!

Thank you so much for the use of your most beautiful home. We have never been so comfortable on holiday as we have here. A bonus was that our daughter got married at the Great Barn, and it was a luxury to be able to walk home. We’ve had everything we needed and more!
