Phillimores

Woodleigh, Kingsbridge, Devon, UK

Set within the calm serenity of sunny South Devon, Phillimores is an intriguing blend of traditional and stylish. This luxury 17th century cottage is idyllically cosseted in a wooded valley, not far from Kingsbridge and the coast, in the much-adored South Hams AONB. This intriguing cottage's enigma lies in its traditional warm Devonshire welcome and cool Scandi interiorscape.

Introduction

This irresistible self-catering cottage in Kingsbridge is set down a quiet country lane with just a handful of other Devon dwellings nestled within a picturesque valley, a short stroll from the River Avon. While winter days will be most welcomed curled up next to the open fire, summer days enjoyed at the seaside will be provide hours of family fun. For local inspiration, day trips to foodie destination Noss Mayo, sailing Mecca Salcombe and the golden dunes of Bantham and Hope Cove should be high on the holiday itinerary.

Inside

Phillimores' olde worlde exterior betrays the spacious living areas within, where mod cons sit seamlessly alongside age-old comforts such as the cream Rayburn and glowing woodburner. Light-filled and cosy, spacious yet intimate, there is plenty of space for everyone to settle in or find a peaceful corner to revel in some well-deserved downtime. When the day’s adventures start to catch, three exquisitely-designed bedrooms reside on the first floor, reached via a choice of two staircases at either end of the cottage.

Outside

The steeply tiered back garden boasts breathtaking views across the valley and provides the perfect spot for lounging with magazines or a sundown G&T when the children have gone to bed. Meanwhile, the front garden is filled with fruit trees and cries out for games of hide-and-seek. With behemothic granite tors soaring high above the wild and dramatic moorland landscape, nearby Dartmoor is an ancient and compelling landscape providing a stark contrast to the cheery lines of beach huts and sand for which South Devon and the South Hams is most famed.

From the owner

“Our children love exploring the local area; whether that be the adjacent fields, walking along the local stream in their wellies or building a dam in the River Avon...the wonder of the local landscape is fascinating for children of all ages.”

From the owner

Phillimores was built during the 17th century, originally as two separate homes. Retaining its olde-worlde charm within a picturesque setting, the cottage is about 800 yards from the River Avon where a fabulous walk can be accessed down the hill next to a former GW railway station that has long since become a family home.

Right in the heart of the South Hams, the attraction of the location for ourselves is the ability to easily access all of the interesting coastal destinations within 15-30 minutes. Whether that be Bigbury-On-Sea to the west, Salcombe to the south or Dartmouth to the east, to name just a few. Not to mention the spectacular Dartmoor National Park nearby to the north.

Recent owners of the cottage include Wilfred Phillimore, son of a famous genealogist and nephew of RP Phillimore, the famous Victorian water-colourist whose works were exhibited at the Royal Academy.

The cottage itself is surprisingly spacious and airy considering its age and character, a benefit for those that appreciate period charm, yet are taller in stature!

Guest Testimonials

We’ve had a lovely week away in this very tranquil cottage. Thank you for the wonderful welcome hamper full of tasty treats!

We were so very excited to arrive, the house is immediately welcoming, cosy and homely. The decoration is stunning to create the 5* impression, yet retain the character of a 17th century home. Thank you.

A wonderful, peaceful stay in this beautiful home. Hearing owls on our first evening set the trend as we then heard them every night. Having good walking straight from the house is always a plus for us and as well as the cosiness of the cottage. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

We loved it so much that we ended up staying an extra night. We wanted to get away and do nothing and this beautiful cottage allowed us to do just that. Salcombe is a must! After a walk, hit the shops and then end your day in the gin distillery. We don´t want to leave, it feels like home!

As soon as we walked in it looked amazing. I went straight to the kitchen and garden and fell in love with it. We stayed for the half term and there was so much to do nearby. I would love to stay here again. My favourite part was the garden as it had so much space to run around in. My whole family loved their stay here, so thank you.

Thank you for arranging an incredible stay! Our family thoroughly enjoyed this home and have created many memories here and in this part of the country. Our sincere thanks for a wonderful experience, we certainly plan on coming back or booking another home with Unique Homestays.

We thought the property was fantastic - both in terms of its style and decor and its picturesque setting. We had a wonderful, relaxing break and fell in love with Phillimores and the surrounding area.
