Zamani in the Cotswolds

Once belonging to Sudeley Castle Estate and later to Hawling Manor, when the owners moved from their Kenyan home to this 17th century barn near Cheltenham they wanted to gift it a new identity. Drawing upon influences of their family travels, they filled it with Indian fabrics, furnishings from Zanzibar and big slabs of oak usually seen in safari lodges. The unique combination of organic materials and contemporary design features create a striking juxtaposition of elements. Those looking for a one-of-a-kind luxury self-catering country house within glorious Cotswolds countryside need look no further.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

The main house comprises three doubles, one twin and one single bedroom, each dressed in luxury linens and bedspreads handmade from pure silk Indian saris. The king-size master bedroom features its own en suite bathroom with shower, whilst the other bedrooms share a family bathroom and separate shower room. There are two WCs on the ground floor. The studio annex has a king-size bed, kitchen and shower room, perfect for grandparents or lovebirds within the group.

Families can look forward to an array of wholesome and high society pastimes at Zamani. Cavort around the Cotswold countryside, have a flutter on the races or explore the tangle of iconic, golden-hued villages nearby. Escape the tourist honeypots by getting lost within the secret gardens and terraces back at the house. Children will love to run wild within the grounds designed by Chelsea Flower Show gold medal winner Julian Dowle, where borders overflow with poppies, delphiniums, brunnera and astrantia, presenting the ultimate English country garden.

For Relaxation

Hawling is the more serene sister village to Bourton-on-the-Water - one of England's most celebrated and beautiful villages - and offers a blissful haven for family holidays or gatherings. Whether outside or inside, the house invites guests to relax amidst the lush verdure of the Eden-like surrounds. Enjoy indulgent breakfast spreads and dinner parties in the ultra-modern glass dining room, where a polished concrete floor and zingy orange chairs contrast the backdrop of old Cotswold stone festooned with greenery. In summer it's all games of croquet and Champagne afternoon teas on the terrace, whilst winters here are made of Aga-cooked suppers and roaring log fires.

This luxury country home is well-equipped with two fridge freezers, two dishwashers, an Aga, induction hob, washing machine and dryer. There is parking for several cars. Whilst the drive is private, access is occasionally needed to the nearby stables.

Our Take

Property Owner Rachel says

We had moved to the UK from Kenya where our children were born and fell in love with the house before we had even stepped inside. We just loved how the back of the house overlooks the best of Cotswolds rolling hills from every window. From that moment we knew we had to have it.

Out & About

Discover places to see and things to do whilst in and around , Gloucestershire to truly enhance your stay come rain or shine!

Cheltenham Nestled on the western edge of the Cotswolds, Cheltenham is an 18th century spa resort that's lost none of its charm. This culture-rich city hosts a range of fantastic festivals, from jazz to science, literature, food and of course the famous equestrian events at Badminton and Gatcombe.

Wandering Wild There is no shortage of excellent footpaths, bridleways or country lanes in the area and there is no better way to embrace a country escape than by setting out on foot with a picnic, so don't forget your walking boots! The best walks from the doorstep include Warden's Way, Windrush Way and Cotswold Way. Tie a country walk in with a country pub, and you have the makings of one fine afternoon.

Villages Lost in Time The picturesque Cotswolds villages such as nearby Burford, Stow-On-The-Wold, Upper Slaughter and Bourton-on-the-Water are delightful to explore, from their cosy tea rooms to unusual boutiques and beautiful parks.

Have a Flutter Horseracing fans will know that the famous Cheltenham Gold Cup is held at the nearby racecourse, but there are plenty of other race meetings throughout the season too. Bored of watching from the sideline? Head to Washpool Equestrian Centre and join in on hacks over beautiful Cotswolds countryside under the expert guidance of respected horse woman Jill Carenza.

History and Architecture Guests will be spoiled for choice with a wealth of stunning National Trust properties and ornamental gardens nearby; Snowshill Manor, Hidcote Manor, Batsford Arboretum and Broadway Tower are to name a few. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Cotswolds in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Sudeley Castle and Gardens are a must - the only private castle in England to have a queen buried within its grounds (Katherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s six wives)!

Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon The City of Dreaming Spires is famous the world over for its University and place in history. Perhaps add a spot of punting or a canal trip, followed up with a pint in The Eagle and Child (favoured by Tolkein and CS Lewis) for a memorable visit. Visit the birthplace of Shakespeare with a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon, a pretty market town with more than 800 years of history to discover.

Food lovers will relish the chance to cook in the contemporary kitchen with its concrete island and shiny jet black Aga. In the company of the brimming flower beds, the garden is perfect for al fresco feasts, if you can bear a mealtime away from the statement dining room. Daylesford in Kingham will be your go-to destination for organic farm produce.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your luxury self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

Walk to Brockhampton to find the nearest inn, The Craven Arms, a proper Cotswold country pub serving home-cooked dishes and hearty Sunday lunches. There are two great eateries worth a visit in Winchcombe; The Lion Inn and Restaurant 5 on North Street. The owners also recommend Le Champignon Sauvage in Cheltenham, serving Michelin-starred dining for 13 years running and using local foraged ingredients far before it was trendy.
