The Tapestry | Luxury Self-Catering Farmhouse | Eynsham, Oxford

The Tapestry

Witney, Oxford, Oxfordshire, The Cotswolds, UK

Hidden down its own mile-long drive in the heart of the meadow-rich Oxfordshire countryside, The Tapestry oozes serenity, a trademark reflected in every gentle choice of dove grey and navy blue wall, every thick-lined curtain, every cushion-plumped sofa. If you've always dreamed of luxurious farmhouse living, this self-catering retreat with its vintage verve is a perfectly fine place to start.

Introduction

Exuding calm, this ancient limestone farmhouse near the old market town of Eynsham is the perfect choice for groups seeking true relaxation, with an interior inspired by the owners’ need to create a peaceful haven for their family. For fans of French antiques and British brands, The Tapestry delivers in spades, think Harris Tweed, Melin Tregwynt Welsh blankets and Cotswold Wollen Weavers' hand-crafted fabrics: country house style with more than a dash of luxury. A settlement since the Bronze Age, this luxury farmhouse is located in the heart of Oxfordshire, its artefact-rich soil has been of great interest to archaeologists, to this day remaining one of the most unique and historic homes in the area. Bring wellies for bracing country walks, and good wine to savour by the fire.

Inside

Using their good taste and expertise garnered through careers in the luxury goods sectors, the owners transformed their sprawling farmhouse from old stone cottage to zen hideout, choosing local and British artisans and enlisting the help of Cheltenham-based architects specialising in Cotswolds houses. Underfloor heating warms the stone floor in the hall, and the kitchen is a place to chill as well as cook, with its cosy corner seating and farmhouse Aga. Five bedrooms feature rattan beds dressed in deep, patterned bedspreads, while the grown-up master suite flaunts a 19th-century Bergere bed with a custom-made mattress and free-standing bath on a heated tiled floor.

Outside

If “tucked away” is the requirement, The Tapestry's location in Oxfordshire could not be more fitting. The farmhouse sits in 320 acres of land and is part of an environmental scheme to rewild vast swathes of surrounding countryside. Guests can wander from seasonal pond to stable block, enjoying the butterfly strips and barley fields that frame the house, and soaking up the solitude all the while. Children can bounce away on the sunken trampoline, explore the walled garden and keep watch for shy rabbits and deer, while adults set up barbecues, salads and towers of Eton mess on the patio. Nearby, a public footpath meanders through lush countryside, tempting long family rambles in dappled sunlight.

From the owner

“We hope guests love life on the farm as much as we do, enjoying the far-reaching views across local landscapes, the beautiful nearby rambles, and all the space within the house itself for relaxing. It´s a dream home, in a dream setting!”

From the owner

The Tapestry is a lovely place to escape the pressures of modern city life. Easily accessible from London, it is situated in a tranquil and rural setting, sitting at the heart of a 300-acre farm in Oxford.

The land has been farmed ecologically for over 30 years as part of an agricultural environmental scheme developed to promote a species-rich habitat, and we have now been rewarded by the return of many mammal and bird species which have nationally been in decline.

From the farmhouse, there are far-reaching views over the fields where deer graze and owls hunt in the evening. We love how quiet it is here, and this is particularly notable when waking in the morning to the sound of silence.

Right from the doorstep, guests can embark on lovely circular walks, setting out to reach the Thames, which borders the farm, and then walking across meadows and farmland, so it's important to bring your Wellington boots.

Children love helping the lock keeper open and close the gates at Pinkhill Lock, an important job during the busy summer months. Inside the farmhouse, we have both large social spaces where the whole party can gather and also smaller rooms where we often escape to, and sit by the fire and read. All bedrooms have views over miles of Oxfordshire countryside.

We very much hope you enjoy your time here at our lovely farm, just as much as we do.
