Alchemy Hill | Luxury Self-Catering Farmhouse | Hay-on-Wye

Alchemy Hill

Hay-On-Wye, Wales, UK

Long a safe-haven for wandering pilgrims, Alchemy Hill is a peaceful self-catering retreat set between the rolling hummocks of Herefordshire near Hay-on-Wye. Those looking for a true holistic refuge will be sure to revel in the beauty of this luxury cottage-style farmhouse, offering an idyllic setting from which to watch Mother Nature put on the finest of shows.

Blending seamlessly with the surrounding Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains, Alchemy Hill's ochre facade wouldn't look an ounce out of place on the set of a Jane Austen adaptation. A true page-turner, with gentle interiors, sweeping mountainous vistas and a luxurious wood-fired al fresco hot tub, only the beauty of the mountains could tempt you away to explore before you hurry back home again. Spend summer days lounging with ice-cold, mint-infused drinks on the lawn, read novels by the woodburner in the living room, or gather together around the al fresco kitchen as the day loses its heat and gives way to twinkling skies.

Inside, this luxury self-catering home's raw beauty takes on a refined edge; effortlessly stylish, casually grand but never distracting eyes from the ever-changing scenery. Sleeping up to eight guests, the bedrooms provide quality, comfort and style. With a modern black four-poster king-size bed, countryside views and a roll-top bath, Alchemy Hill's master bedroom offers the perfect spot for mornings lingering in bed, drinking tea and skimming magazines. While the first floor boasts two further luxurious bedrooms, the ground floor is home to the final bedroom, complete with an oak four-poster king-size bed.

Sitting comfortably amongst wildflowers and meadows close to Hay-on-Wye, Alchemy Hill is a veritable haven for wildlife and tired souls looking to disconnect and recharge. The landscaped gardens, dotted with outdoor sofas and plenty of idyllic picnic spots, have been designed with bees in mind, ensuring happy pollinators can lazily bob from flower to flower without a single care in the world. For the ramblers in the group, walk straight from the door and over the courtyard, through the wooden gate and under windswept woodland and magical birdsong before emerging between the wild ponies and hares onto acres upon acres of wild moorland.

From the owner

“We fell in love with this magical landscape and were struck by its wildness and beauty. The views of the Black Mountains are truly breathtaking. Watch the sun rise and the mist linger in the Wye valley, the stillness here encourages you to pause and realise everything is okay.”

From the owner

Myself, my partner Neal and our beloved German Pointer 'Schmoo' have always been drawn to nature. While I had always loved living in the city (I've lived in London, Paris and Manchester), I found myself ready for something more gentle; somewhere rural that was full of creative souls.

We found that creative haven in Hay-on-Wye; writers and artists are tucked away on little farms in and around the area, which is reflected in the abundance of shops and galleries. Inspired by the relocation of a friend, we came to visit when the Hay Literary Festival was taking place and decided to have a look in the estate agent window.

A couple of appointments later, on a sunny, snowy day in March 2012, we found ourselves excitedly driving up the single lane track towards Alchemy Hill. Sweeping past its high verges, as soon as we turned the corner and drove through the gate we were totally awe-struck. The spectacular views and sheer immensity of the Black Mountains left us dumbfounded; they looked like a 50's canvas film backdrop!

Years later, we still find the location and scenery just as amazing. The moorland behind the house is so special; catch the light at just the right angle and the hills become reminiscent of prehistoric creatures sleeping peacefully. The expanse encourages you to breathe more deeply, it's wonderful!
