Holywell Bay

All Destinations UK Cornwall Holywell Bay

A mile of golden beach, a handful of rock pools and a backdrop of dunes: no wonder this pretty Cornish bay is a blissful holiday hangout.

Named after a holy well – which is still said to be tucked into a sea cave in the area – this small Cornish beach resort is a short drive down the coast from Newquay, placing it firmly in surf-territory yet nicely apart from the board-loving crowds. It still caters to the leisure lovers, though, with a pitch & putt at the local golf club, and a surf school to make sure the smalls get some kind of training before rushing headlong into the waves, plus a café for well-earned refreshments.

Once surfing is done, explorers can poke about the caves to spot some of the amazing calcium deposits found here. Look the other way, out to sea, to try and catch a glimpse of the old Argentinian wreck just offshore. The high dunes that back the beach make great exploring trails, but head further afield for stunning coastline hikes to Perranporth Beach in the south, or Pentire Head to the north, both firmly on the South West Coast Path list of beautiful walks.
