Porth Joke

The lesser-known neighbour of popular Holywell Bay and Crantock Beach this pretty little stretch of sand is an idea, and peaceful, beach retreat.

Continuing the long string of beaches running right up the north Cornish coast, Porth Joke (or 'Poly Jokke' as it is also known) is one of the area's best-kept secrets, a smaller version of the classic Cornish day-tripper idyll. The quiet location, and slight distance from car park, attracts visitors wanting to read a good book in peace or take a tranquil dip in the slightly less crowded waves. That said, surf action is all around these waters with boarding mecca Newquay a few bays north, so there will always be would-be boardies giving the rollers crashing a go.

Daytrips inland are plentiful. Head north to the well-known fishing port of Padstow for a plate of the freshest daily catch: this is widely thought of as Rick Stein's world-famous Seafood Restaurant is here, along with many other well-stocked maritime cafés and eateries. From Padstow, hop on the ferry for the short sail to the high-end resort of Rock. Sporty types can hire (or bring) a bike then ride the Camel Trail, a scenic disused railway line from Padstow to the busy river town of Wadebridge; don't forget you'll need to cycle all the way back again.
