Luxury self-catering accommodation in Rilla Mill
At the top of the Cornish peninsula, this rural village sits right on the edge of Bodmin Moor, perfectly placed for rambles in the countryside. This Poldarkian landscape amid stunning scenery is the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway or for escaping with the family to the wilderness.
This tiny hamlet to the east of Bodmin Moor welcomes walkers roaming the gorse-covered countryside. Using a moorland cottage as a base, the most popular hike is across undulating scrubland to Brown Willy, the highest point in Cornwall, with sweeping views across the county. Rough Tor is another impressive hike with Iron and Bronze Age remains on its long slopes, and nearby Minions is an archaeological hot spot, with a curious Cheesewring rock formation, standing stone circle and burial 'barrow'. Poldark Tours has its base in Rilla Mill, as many scenes were filmed locally.
In between the local villages is a dense network of old public pathways, said to have once been the miners' routes to work, now enjoyed and explored by visiting ramblers. In fact, further south is the old mining hub of Liskeard, once a busy market town and now offering shops, pubs, cafés and museums, some still retaining their characterful Victorian fronts. This rugged area is steeped in myth and legend, most notably perhaps is the fabled Beast of Bodmin Moor, a supposed big cat pictured many times in blurry snaps. Keep a camera handy, and don't leave the milk on your cottage doorstep.
