South East Cornwall

All Destinations UK Cornwall South East Cornwall

Cornwall's southern coastline draws a feathered line from the rolling Tamar, in and out of creeks and opening onto sandy coves.

Family holidays to this corner of Cornwall are all about the beach, the leafy cliff walk, and plenty of cream teas. Take the small pirates on a bucket-and-spade adventure through the hidden caves and coves that dot this peaceful stretch of coast. Fishing ports and tiny towns provide perfect stop-offs when it's time for a wrap of fish 'n' chips or a pasty: Falmouth is a major port with plenty of boutique shops and festivals throughout the year. Picturesque Polperro has a small, sandy beach, pubs and a bakery, so it's perfect for a peaceful daytrip.

Fowey has maritime history in spades, with sweet cottages stacked high above the harbour, gulls wheeling for spare ice creams, and secluded Readmoney Cove accepting the picnic crowds all year round.

This area is known for its associations with Daphne Du Maurier, who wrote her first novel while she lived in a house on the cliff; take a coastal walk and see if you can spot it. As for historic houses, take a peek around Restormel Castle's crumbled ruins and climb the walls for great views of the sweeping countryside; or explore the beautiful rooms, cycle trails and gardens at Lanhydrock House, before treating yourselves to a classic cream tea in the restaurant.
