South West Cornwall

The curve in the western-most part of Cornwall is full of tiny headlands, and seal- and bird-spotters enjoying the stunning clifftops views out to sea.

Clifftop theatres, disused mines and tiny fishing ports dot this arc of south Cornwall, popular with holidaymakers looking for a rural or maritime idyll. Far west, the Lizard Peninsula provides sparkly sea views and sighting of wild nesting birds; this stretch of coastline is well-known amongst wildlife-spotters for its natural bounty. Inland creeks push in from the coast all the way along the south west: Carrick Roads is flanked by Falmouth and St Mawes, and provides boaters with peaceful backwater locations.

Many of Cornwall's iconic towns have southern locations: Penzance is the main gateway to the Isles of Scilly, ferrying passengers across all year round. Mousehole is the famed village known for its book The Mousehole Cat, its famous 'Stargazey' pie, and a brilliant light display every Christmas. This far west, sub-tropical gardens offer plants that thrive in the mild climate: fine displays can be found at Trelissick, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, and the iconic domes of the Eden Project, with its global plantings.
