All Destinations UK Devon Axminster

The beautiful and well-known market town of Axminster sits on the border of Devon and Dorset, rolling countryside on all sides and the fossil-rich Jurassic coastline a short drive south for beachy daytrips.

Perhaps best known for its carpets, the picturesque Devon town of Axminster has a depth of history that goes much deeper than its connection with the rug trade. Dating back to Celtic times, the town sits on two key Roman roads, one stretching roughly north-south and one heading east-west, meaning the area has always been on an important trading route. The name Axminster relates to a monastery or large church, and visitors won't fail to spot the Saxon church of St Mary right in the centre of this bustling town.

Carpet fame developed in Axminster in the 18thácentury when Thomas Whitty developed the original factory producing the stunning floorpieces, and the heritage line is still in production today. These days the bustling shops, museums and markets are additional elements that draw in hundreds of visitors year on year, good rail links to London making it a popular spot for weekend breaks. The East Devon footpath is on the doorstep for walkers and nature-lovers, and plenty of beaches are a short drive to the south.
