All Destinations UK Scotland Glasgow

Scotland's second biggest city, Glasgow carries an artistic crown, known for its world-famous art school and as the birthplace of designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh; venture into the mountainous surrounds for stunning scenery.

Much of the city of Glasgow has its handsome stone roots in medieval times, from the beautiful big cathedral, first stone bridge over the River Clyde, and well-known university. Today, the revered School of Art draws students keen to enjoy hipster hangouts around town, travelling by the city subway – third oldest in the world after London and Budapest. Most visitors, not just art students, make a point of visiting The Mackintosh House, reconstructed rooms from the world-famous architect's own home.

True to form for beautiful Scotland, out-of-town trips come with stunning scenery, like the short drive north to Loch Lomond, where watersports across the blue sparkly 70km surface area vary from kayaking and canoeing to stand-up paddle-boarding and fishing (salmon from Jan or Feb, trout from March). There's a speedboat pub tour for pint-sampling, or take a cruise to one of the loch-side pubs. Food? Once known for frying its chocolate bars, Glasgow now dishes up fine dining for those with daintier palates.
