FROM THE EDITOR

That layered look, those amber hues and Sunday afternoon smorgasbords piled-high with figs, berries and cheese… it can only be October. This month we tap into our human instincts as we celebrate the start of the hunter-gatherer season. Over on the journal we delve into the biophilia hypothesis, as well as show how you can style your home for winter hibernation.  We unveiled two new arrivals, an uberstylish home on Loch Rannoch and a coastal Devon cottage steeped in stories, and congratulated newlyweds who decided to tie the knot at Charity having been inspired by a poem they read on the wall during their first visit. If you don't know it, take a read below. Wrap up and enjoy.

NEW ARRIVALS

Sublimely remote and meticulously designed, this intriguing modernist home sits on the shores of Loch Rannoch with two private beaches. Solace is the watchword of the once-Viking settlement; a place where clean lines and Scandinavian simplicity work in perfect contrast to the rolling rocky mountains and wild glens of the stunning West Highland landscape.

The Brandy Thief

The Brandy Thief offers sweet relief on the edge of Lee Beach near Ilfracombe, settled in a place where coconut-scented gorse flowers sweep across the moors before meeting toiling sea. What once was a smugglers' lair is now a serene family cottage within tip-toeing distance of the sea. Following a sensitive renovation, maritime charm still flows throughout, from the jute-lined floors to the timber rafters.

ON THE JOURNAL

Tell a story of autumn by adding layers to your interior; think rustic linens, overlapping rugs and skinny taper candles. Warm ginger and mossy green are key tones for the remainder of 2019, best matched with navy for a sophisticated finish. When it comes to outside, wrap up and make the most of al fresco living before the temperature plummets. Cheese, charcuterie, bread, fruit, nuts, raw vegetables, chutneys, edible flowers… grazing tables are the high-flying food fad designed for the Instagram generation and only set to get bigger as we head towards the festive spell... Read the full story.

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.
Not time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.
No time to see in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.
No time to turn at beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.
A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
