February 2007

It's no surprise that North Cornwall is one of the UK's hottest locations to holiday, with its sweeping sandy beaches, rugged sea cliffs, Atlantic breakers and king foodie reputation. But why fight the crowds for a beachfront room when some of the area's most exclusive accommodation is squirreled away in the undulating countryside on the brink of the coast? Close to the hotspots of Rock, Polzeath, Trebarwith Strand and Daymer Bay, we've uncovered a handful of unique year-round retreats where you can be enveloped in exquisite country living, with the stunning treasures of Cornwall's North Coast just minutes away.

Choose to be pampered or cater for yourselves - whether you want a hideaway for two, or a spacious barn conversion for family and friends, these are private country pads where you can make yourself at home.

Closest Beach:
Sleeps? 10

Open the door to the luxurious zone of an 18th Century stone barn that offers the comforts of a boutique hotel in the privacy of a private abode. From the organic handmade soap to the under-floor heating and wood-burning stoves, you will be pleasantly seduced by the luxuries of country-style living.

Forget having to lift a finger; your accommodation will be serviced daily and a cook will prepare breakfast, cakes and a sumptuous three-course dinner based on fresh seasonal produce (making the most of lamb and beef reared on the farm). To remind you of the beach life on the doorstep the rooms are decked out with driftwood and nautical features, and there is even a bunkroom laid out in the style of ship's cabin.

How much? From £3,755 - £5,550 per week - for the main barn and includes cook. Mill Rock & the Cow Shed (see below) from £5,755 - £8,300 (all inclusive)

Adjacent to Mill Rock, The Cowshed is a second barn offering the same level of absolute luxury on a self-catering basis. Slate floors are warmed by under-floor heating and the interior is adorned with designer fabrics and local works of art.

Let your inner chef loose in the well-equipped kitchen (a welcome hamper of breakfast ingredients awaits), pre-order homemade suppers and cakes from the cook, or explore a treasure trove of local restaurants including Rick Steins Seafood Restaurant.

How much? From £1000 - £1750 per week
More Info: (self-catering)

Closest Beach:
Rock, Daymer Bay and the Seven Bays of St Merryn
Sleeps: 2-4

A step further into the countryside on the outskirts of Wadebridge, at Janet Shearer's Artists' Retreat you can experience the essence of Cornish country life surrounded by peacocks, dogs, horses, and the views of the verdant Ruthern Valley.

Yet all this lies just a short drive from the wild oceanic scenery of the North Coast. Made with artists in mind, but not solely for those of you who want to pick up a paintbrush, this is a place to just getaway from it all. The doors to the new barn conversion open in June this year, promising a cosy retreat for couples (or up to four), with a painting studio and the tutelage of an internationally renowned Trompe L'oeil artist at your fingertips if you wish.

How much? From £45-£50 per night B&B (plus art tuition from £25 per hour-£100 per day)

Inside you can relax in a clean, stylish and contemporary setting with nautical features such as the clinker boat hanging from the beams. Oak flooring, a wood-burning stove, wooden beams and a stable door to the garden create an idyllic country cottage feel that has been seamlessly fused with all mod-cons.
