Luxury lakeside cottage on Lough Ree in County Westmeath, Ireland

You’ll find Walden Lakehouse nestled on the middle lake of the iconic River Shannon near a small rural village named Glasson, a jewel in Ireland’s midlands region. Passed down through an Irish family, this unique self-catering cottage affords an authentic homestay experience. Light-filled interiors chime to contemporary design, with retro references harking back to the dwelling’s 1960’s roots. An idyllic base for discovering all that County Westmeath has on offer, it’s little wonder this modest lakehouse in the woods was recently crowned ‘Ireland’s Home of The Year’.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

One-level living affords a sense of ease and simplicity at this ergonomically designed cottage. Beyond the large open plan kitchen-living area lie two double bedrooms: one has an en suite shower room with soothing views of sun-dappled woodland, whilst the other features an en suite bathroom and sliding glass doors opening out to the lake. There is also a separate WC decorated in an underwater scene, nodding to the overall subtle fisherman’s retreat theme.

Start the day watching swans glide by the bottom of the bed from the comfort of the covers (a side of tea and hot, buttery soda bread essential). Waldon Lakehouse celebrates the simple things in life and, with the glistening lake in view from almost every window, it’s hard to resist a morning dip. Sky-high oak, beech and hazel trees swaddle the lakehouse in privacy, whilst ivy and holly ensure year-round greenery. The front flower beds provide a feast for the senses; stuffed with mint, rosemary, sage, thyme and basil. There's nowhere else you'd rather be on a balmy summer's evening.

For Relaxation

The local village of Glasson is also known as ‘Village of the Roses’ and rapidly becoming a popular holiday destination for those wanting a cultural, chic escape in a lesser-known fold of the Emerald Isle. Galway City is less than an hour away, with easy access to the Wild Atlantic Way. Discover the Seven Wonders of Fore or venture to ancient Athlone nearby where you can trek through a medieval town, taste the magic made in an Irish distillery and try your hand at traditional arts and crafts. Once having happily exhausted the local culture, take a boat trip down the soothing river Shannon and finish the evening devouring delicious local produce in Glasson's 'foodie triangle'.

The Practicalities

There is private parking for two cars outside the cottage. Perfectly outfitted for self-catering escapes, the bright and spacious kitchen features a Miele oven and hob, fridge freezer, dishwasher and washer/dryer.

Our Take

Property Owner Egon says

For us, it feels like falling in love with the cottage anew each time we visit. The view of the lake changes daily and with the seasons. The sunsets are amazing, and even when it´s a howling gale outside, we just put another log on the fire and enjoy the drama from the cosy interior.

Eat Drink and Be Merry No trip to Ireland is complete without visiting an authentic Irish pub. From steaming bowls of stew to velvety pints of Guinness and traditional folk music, be prepared for evenings to run well into the wee hours. Grogan’s and Sean’s Bar come highly recommended, both just a few miles from the lakehouse, offering a friendly welcome and lively atmosphere.

On Your Bike Boasting 42 kilometres of dedicated cycle paths, the Old Rail Trail is a must. Weave your way through the landscape snaking past canals, under arched bridges and through disused tunnels to make the most of the fresh Irish air. With a variety of entrance and exit points, those who prefer a more leisurely cycle can hop on and off, exploring the villages and attractions dotted along the way.

Cultural Cruises Climb aboard the whimsically-named Viking Ship and set sail along the river Shannon which carves its way through Lough Ree to Athlone and beyond. With daily sailings departing from the quayside at Athlone Castle, a cruise on these iconic boats is a wonderful way to soak up some history with interesting stops to visit ancient Irish monasteries.

Head to the Lake With Lough Ree on your doorstep, no stay is complete without exploring the area from the water. Start your day kayaking around the islets scattered across the lough before renting a motor boat and heading off, rods in hand, to catch a fishy supper. For those who want to try their hand at stand-up paddle boarding, be sure to visit Bay Sports.

Built in the swinging sixties, the kitchen-diner is the heart of this unique Irish home and retains much of the original character. Clementine coloured Louis Poulson pendant lights from 1960's Denmark shine light on the Carrara marble worktop - making a stylish space for guests to get experimental in the kitchen.

Eating Out

For an easy supper, tuck into hearty home-cooked food at Killinure Chalets (owned by the owner's brother Manfred), open April through to October and just 100 metres away. Head into Glasson's 'foodie triangle' where The Villager, Glasson Village Restaurant and Grogan's offer, gastro, French and traditional Irish pub fare respectively. If you want something adventurous in Athlone, you'll find it served up at The Fatted Calf - multi award-winning and well worth a visit.
