The Chalk House | Luxury Self-Catering Cottage | Mousehole, Cornwall

Perched above Mousehole bay in a nest of exotic gardens, The Chalk House takes prime position in one of England’s most charming seaside villages. Dating back to Victorian times, this luxury self-catering retreat has a nostalgic appeal. Ebony coloured floorboards and whitewashed walls give vintage verve, whilst industrial lighting and copper pots add flourishes of industrial harbour town charm.

Luxury self-catering cottage in Mousehole

Dip your toes into the warm, whimsical Cornish life with a break away at The Chalk House. This luxury self-catering home was tenderly handcrafted by a local stonemason around 1900; his treasured tools buried in the garden and his family still living in the village today. Full of history and evoking the romance of old-fashioned seaside holidays, The Chalk House invites guests to swim in the harbour, cosy up by the fire and mosey around Mousehole popping into postcard shops and ice-cream parlours until the sun goes down.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

A beautiful armoire, king-size bed and cheval mirror stand as statements of romantic French luxury in the boutique-style master bedroom, arranged on a polished dark wood floor and flaunting views out to sea from the soft leather chair in the bay window. The twin bedroom has a fresh, vintage vibe; featuring a pair of brass beds and anglepoise lamps in perfect symmetry. The bathroom is the third and final room on the first floor, complete with walk-in shower and freestanding bathtub where you can bathe whilst drinking in the intoxicating sea views (glass of bubbly optional!).

The Chalk House's lush coastal gardens are quite a rarity in Mousehole, offering a sublime vantage point for soaking up the village's tangle of quintessential fishermen's cottages and panoramic sea views beyond. Sprawling over two tiers, the outdoor arena makes for a fun-filled afternoon of garden games, spilling late into the evening when guests can keep toasty by the warmth of the crackling fire pit. Christmas here is an extra special occasion, with the twinkling of Mousehole harbour Christmas lights sparking a magical festive ambience quite unlike anywhere else.

For Relaxation

Start the day with a refreshing dip in Penzance's art deco sea pool or find a secret spot to sit awhile and watch the sea crashing over the rocks. With spectacular coast paths and golden coves galore, summers in west Cornwall are a dream - especially for lovebirds and young families. Spend rainy days wending through Mousehole's narrow streets to find pastry shops and coffee spots, before returning to the roaring wood burner. Rejuvenate on the edge of the ocean and let the hypnotising sounds of the sea bring a sense of pure freedom in the comfort of this luxury coastal retreat.

Due to the endearing nature of Mousehole’s narrow, winding streets, there is no vehicle access to The Chalk House, but parking is within easy reach with two harbourside car parks a five minute walk away at £3 per day. The traditional farmhouse kitchen is adorned with Le Creuset cookware, a retro Gorenje fridge, Dualit appliances and a Range cooker.
