Phillimores | Luxury Self-Catering | Kingsbridge, South Devon

Set within the calm serenity of sunny South Devon, Phillimores is an intriguing blend of traditional and stylish. This luxury 17th century self-catering cottage is idyllically cosseted in a wooded valley, not far from Kingsbridge and the coast, in the much-adored South Hams AONB. The cottage's enigma lies in its traditional warm Devonshire welcome and juxtaposing cool Scandi interiorscape.

Scandi-Style Luxury Thatched Holiday Cottage Kingsbridge

This irresistible luxury self-catering cottage in Kingsbridge is set down a quiet country lane with just a handful of other cottages nestled within the picturesque valley environs, just a short stroll from the River Avon. Phillimores' olde worlde exterior betrays the spacious and luxury living areas within where mod cons sit seamlessly alongside age-old comforts such as the cream Rayburn and cosy woodburner. Summer days enjoyed at the seaside will create cherished family memories of a time well spent.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Three exquisitely-designed bedrooms reside on the first floor of this gorgeous home and can be reached via a choice of two staircases at either end of the cottage. There are two spacious super-king bedrooms as well as a bunk room (with trundle bed) perfect for children. The master bedroom has easy staircase access to the ground floor shower room, whilst the shared family bathroom on the first floor exudes a sleek coolness that promises the most rejuvenating pampering experience.

Nestled into a hillside within Woodleigh Glen, the approach to Phillimores' via the winding country lane will evoke excitement as finches and bunnies dart for cover within the tumbling hedgerows. The steeply-tiered back garden boasts breath-taking views across the valley and provides the perfect spot for a sundown G&T when the children have gone to bed, whilst the front garden is filled with fruit trees and cries out for games of hide-and-seek. With behemothic granite tors soaring high above the wild and dramatic moorland landscape, nearby Dartmoor is an ancient and compelling landscape providing a stark contrast to the cheery lines of beach-huts and golden sand for which South Devon and the South Hams is most famed.

For Relaxation

Long a hotspot for the fashionable yachtie set, local town Kingsbridge is the perfect medley of buzzing traditional English market town and a tranquil milieu set around its own little estuary. Day trips to foodie destination Noss Mayo, sailing Mecca Salcombe and the golden dunes of Bantham and Hope Cove will be high on the holiday itinerary when staying at Phillimores. Artsy Dartmouth and the bohemian town of nearby Totnes have between them a wealth of galleries and independent shops to satisfy creatives.

There is parking for up to three cars at the top of the rear garden, and space for unloading one car to the front of the house. Phillimores has a woodburner as well as underfloor heating beneath the stone floors. Please note that due to the unique stair design, unfortunately it is not possible to fix a stair gate. The cottage is well-equipped with a Rayburn, large fridge freezer, dishwasher and microwave, plus a washing machine and dryer concealed within the ground floor wet room.

Our children love exploring the local area; whether that be the adjacent fields, walking along the local stream in their wellies or building a dam in the river Avon...the wonder of the local landscape is fascinating for kids of all ages. The peace and quiet will leave you more relaxed than ever!

Out & About

Discover places to see and things to do whilst in and around Woodleigh, Devon to truly enhance your stay come rain or shine!

Kingsbridge This thriving market town is located at the head of the Kingsbridge estuary, a haven for sailors and wading birds alike. There is a thriving local community, lots of individual shops selling local produce and products, cafes, restaurants and pubs, a museum and several art galleries. The farmers’ market comes to town on the first and third Saturday mornings of each month with a cornucopia of local produce on sale in the town square.

Beaches With 25 beaches to choose from in the South Hams, you could visit a different beach every day for over three weeks! Nearby Bigbury, Blackpool Sands and Challaborough are all ‘Blue Flag’ beaches. Bantham is a Marine Conservation Society recommended beach with rock pools and sand dunes to explore, as well as being a good place for surfing and windsurfing. Beautiful Bigbury-on-Sea and Thurlestone have wide expanses of flat golden sand, while Hallsands is a sheltered, shingle cove. Hope Cove, once frequented by smugglers, is a pretty fishing village with two sandy beaches and shipwrecks!

Plymouth Swim in an art-deco lido, tour a gin distillery, learn to kayak, roam the UK's largest aquarium, take a boat trip across the bay or see a top-class theatre show in Britain's ocean city. Don't miss the historic Plymouth Hoe – a cafe-dotted, wide grassy headland offering captivating views of a boat-studded bay.

Woodlands Adventure Park Here you can find rides and attractions, indoor and outdoor play, plus a zoo/farm with meerkats and falconry displays. Oodles of fun for all ages, come rain or shine!

History and Adventure If you fancy a day out with a difference then visit Burgh Island which is just a five-minute stroll across the sandy, life-guarded beach at Bigbury-on-Sea (at high tide, the famously unique sea tractor transports passengers through the waves instead). This small rugged island has a fascinating history; in the 14th century, resident monks brewed mead and fishermen drank at the Pilchard Inn, still a fine place for tall tales and ghost stories.

Nearest Beach Bigbury and Batham are approximately 6 miles from the propery, Hope Cove is 8.6 miles away, and Salcombe is 9.5miles away.

Without doubt the heart of this beautiful home, the whole family can get involved in preparing supper in the traditional open plan kitchen and dining room, where you'll find a Rayburn and all mod cons. Fling open the doors which lead directly onto the garden for al fresco suppers and light lunches in the sunshine.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your luxury self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you and your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

Salcombe is just 15 minutes away where you will find plenty of eateries and fine dining opportunities among the sailing fraternity who favour this sailing Mecca . The New Angel, Dartmouth, is around half an hour from the house and highly recommended. Plymouth is not far away and counts high-profile chefs Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Mitch Tonks among its newly generated waterfront foodie area.
