The Creamery | Luxury Self-Catering Holiday | Appledore, Clovelly

Far from the crowds and known only to the select few, the Hartland Heritage Coast is a halcyon world of pebble beaches and Beatrix Potter wildlife backed by a deep blue sea. Set between the quintessential fishing villages of Appledore and Clovelly, The Creamery was made for those hidden-away luxury self-catering holidays in north Devon.

The Creamery started life as a cattle shed and part of the prestigious Portledge Estate in Abbotsham, but today provides luxury self-catering breaks in a scene of rural north Devon bliss. Pastorally perfect in every way, even the barn's dappled stone exterior resembles a black and white cowhide. Pheasants fly free alongside pied wagtails and goldfinches, best observed from the comfort of the country interiors. Just a short walk away lies the South West Coast Path with its views to Lundy Island and promise of endless adventures.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

A wooden staircase leads from the open-plan living space up to the first floor, where high vaulted ceilings, a writing nook and two double bedrooms await. The large king-size bedroom with en suite shower room and garden views is to one side of the house, whilst the super king-size zip-and-link bedroom is to the other, boasting a freestanding roll top bath as well as an en suite with walk-in rainfall shower.

The private garden is backed by sunny yellow fields of rapeseed and features a secret woodland garden area with birdwatcher's bench. Summertime on the south-facing deck will be a balmy affair, providing a sheltered spot for sunbathing with a pile of travel magazines. When the changeable English weather brings cloudburst, grab your plate of scones and tiptoe across to the summerhouse which is complete with fire and sheepskins underfoot for extra cosiness.

For Relaxation

A gentle amble down to Greencliff beach is a fine way to wile away an afternoon. Go armed with fishing nets to catch a prawn lunch, or entertain children finding wildlife in the hundreds of rockpools left between tides. Visit picture-perfect Clovelly village nearby, where some streets are even too narrow for cars, making it all the more tranquil. A drive along Devon's Atlantic Highway will take you to the grand sandy beaches of Croyde, Braunton and Woolacombe Bay, or boat-trip to Lundy and immerse yourself in island life for the day. Walk to The Thatched Inn for supper, before retiring to the fire for the evening to pen your postcards 'Devon is a dream, wish you were here'.

There is off-road parking for several cars. The country kitchen is perfectly outfitted for couples or small families, featuring an electric range cooker, fridge freezer, microwave, dishwasher and washer-dryer.

Out & About

Discover places to see and things to do whilst in and around Abbotsham, Devon to truly enhance your stay come rain or shine!

Lundy Island Three miles in length and half-a-mile wide, a day trip to Lundy Island is an unforgettable experience and an absolute must when staying in north Devon. This unique and unspoilt granite islet boasts clear seas, diverse scenery and harbours a range of wildlife. Climb aboard the MS Oldenburg in Bideford and take the two hour sail to this spectacular landmark.

Catch of the Day In just under 10 minutes by car you'll discover the estuary village of Appledore, where the Taw and Torridge rivers meet before they flow into the ocean at Bideford Bay. Head to Appledore's quay and embark on a fishing trip to catch fresh mackerel or pollack for supper. With tackle and bait provided, fishing trips are a great way to spend an afternoon in the fresh salty air.

Devon’s Charming Villages Head to Clovelly, a timeless village set into a hillside, where the steep cobbled street tumbles down past whitewashed cottages towards the harbour below. Enjoy locally made ice-cream on the quay before summoning up the energy to head back up the hill. No trip to Clovelly is complete without visiting the resident donkeys, who played a vital role in the village history.

Rock Pooling Grab your buckets and fishing nets and head off on foot to spend a day at nearby Greencliff beach. Just a short stroll from The Creamery, pheasants and squirrels will keep you company during the scenic walk. Once the tide retreats, little ones will enjoy spending hours overturning stones waiting to see what lies beneath, whilst grown-ups picnic on traditional Devonshire splits.

The open-plan farmhouse-style kitchen and its array of country chic accessories are perfect for a luxury self-catering break. Local farm shops are the best option for Devon produce, ensuring you experience the area's freshest offerings. Let the log burner provide the crackling soundtrack to your candlelit supper, or pull open the doors and dine on the south-facing deck in summer.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your luxury self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

If you want to enjoy a few tipples with your supper, The (as quaint as it sounds) Thatched Inn in Abbotsham is less than a mile's walk away and a fine example of how a country Devon inn should be. For fish dishes, head to The Boathouse, or for something spicy, try Indian restaurant The Spice - both nearby in Bideford.
