On the north Devon coast where two rivers meet, this maritime town was once a vital shipbuilding centre and still has a thriving boating population. Think seagulls, sparkly waters, fresh fish... and local ice cream too!

Tucked right between the rivers Taw and Torridge, and just a paddle from the sea, Appledore was always going to have a history in boating. A shipyard still exists today, and there are detailed explanations of the town's shipping history in its maritime museum, covering shipwrecks, wartime beach stories, medieval trade and Viking history. Children love visiting the mocked-up Victorian schoolroom to get a glimpse of bygone learning methods, and around town it's easy to see how the pretty little streets would once have been packed with traders selling cockles and mussels.

Visitors can still buy delicious fresh seafood, and locally made Hocking's ice cream too: if one of the company vans is in town during summer that's the place to buy a cone (or buy a slab direct from the factory on weekdays in winter). Coastal walks will always be a feature of Devon, and Appledore is right on the Hartland Heritage Coast trail, a route that winds prettily along to a scenic peninsula. For water adventures, a ferry makes trips across the River Torridge to Instow: take buckets and spades for use on the long sandy beach.
