Self-catering farmhouse for hire near Burton Bradstock, Dorset

Dorset’s River Bride and undulating valleys provide a charming backdrop for this luxury self-catering cottage-style farmhouse near Hive Beach and Burton Bradstock. Standing proud amidst mown lawns and wildflower meadows, filled with floor-to-ceiling windows and exposed wood, this 18th century home embraces both the wilder and finer things in life. Wander to the sheep paddock to chat to the resident Gotland herd, their shepherdess and sheepdogs, find a hidden picnic table between the trees or pack the car and head for a day on one of Dorset’s stretches of sand.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

This bright home in rural Dorset spans over three traditionally furnished floors. On the first, the master suite features a super king-size bed with a dressing room, en suite shower room and floor-to-ceiling French windows. On this floor there is also one super king, one twin (both with en suite shower rooms) and one king-size bedroom. Upstairs in the eaves of the house there is a further super king-size bedroom with en suite shower, one king and one twin. There are two family bath and shower rooms on the first and second floors, and one separate WC on the ground floor.

Winding through the country lanes of Dorset with a car full of hiking boots and buckets and spades, sea glimpsing in and out of view on one side and rolling hills on the other, it’s obvious a family holiday to remember awaits at Kingfisher Farm. Children will delight in the wildlife which all but knocks on the front door; swallows and house martins soar overhead, herons paddle in the gentle stream and organic eggs from next door’s hens (perfect for breakfast!) can be bought on the gate for a few pennies. Amble barefoot through the orchard, dangle feet over the jetty to cool in the river or sneak away from it all to sip wine, hidden from view between tall, nodding flower heads.

For Relaxation

Enjoy a spot of reading in the garden before wandering to the river’s edge, little ones in tow, to spot dragonflies and fish going about their day before taking a day trip to the caramel-coloured sands of Hive Beach. Here, run free in the sunshine, jumping waves and burying dad in the sand, before returning home, hair thick with salt and sand between toes, to a barbecue banquet or movie marathon in the snug.

The modern kitchen-diner flaunts one electric Everhot range cooker, one electric oven, two Smeg dishwashers, one large American fridge freezer, one small fridge and a wine cooler. Should guests need them, a washing machine and tumble dryer are available. Parking is available at the front and around the side of the property for seven cars. Please note that the shepherdess visits daily to tend her flock of sheep in the paddock and the owners live next door.

Fossil hunt Fossil hunters will delight at the Jurassic landscape; some of the stones along this coast and on Chesil Beach are up to 200 million years old! Whether an enthusiast or simply looking for a souvenir to take home, the hillsides, beaches and footpaths surrounding Kingfisher Farm are positively brimming with evidence of prehistoric times. The most famous of all of Dorset's fossil-filled beaches is Lyme Regis, where both paleantologists and day-trippers scour the sand and cliffs throughout the year.

Visit Lyme Regis Pretty, Georgian Lyme Regis has everything one could ever expect from an English seaside town; ice cream shops, fish and chips, seagulls and a promenade which fringes the sea.

Walk in the footsteps of a literary great Visit Chesil Beach; one of the finest beaches in Europe, and find out what inspired Ian McEwan to write his best-selling novel, On Chesil Beach. Dorchester, just 20-minutes from Kingfisher Farm, was once the home of Thomas Hardy, along with the setting in which he wrote Tess of the d'Urbevilles.

Go to market Head to Bridport on Wednesdays and Saturdays for the town's weekly markets. Bridport is also home to a huge range of independent shops and boutique eateries. Antique hunters will be right at home in the town's Vintage Quarter, found just behind Waitrose.

Bridport Literary Festival Literary enthusiasts, assemble! Each year at the beginning of November, Bridport hosts a week-long annual festival where book worms can enjoy and take part in talks and writing workshops with acclaimed authors.

Nearest Beaches Six miles and under 15 minutes to Hive Beach, four and a half miles or 15 minutes to West Bexington and five miles and ten minutes to Chesil Beach, although please be aware that swimming on Chesil is not advised due to strong tidal rips and steep shingle banks.

Budding chefs will be at home in Kingfisher Farm's large open-plan kitchen and diner, where rustling up a storm in front of far-reaching rural views will be far more appealing than eating out. Gather organic veg from Modbury Farm Shop, the best bacon in Dorset from The Post Office in Burton Bradstock and wine from merchants Morrish and Banham for the finest feast imaginable.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your luxury self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal (on prior request and subject to an additional cost). Raspberry and Rhubarb in nearby in Litton Cheney comes highly recommended.

Eating Out

There are certainly no lack of pubs and sea-view cafes in coastal Dorset. For hearty pub meals and delicious ales within walking distance of Kingfisher Farm, The Crown is an easy three mile walk across farmland and winding country lanes. Of course, it's no trip to Burton Bradstock without lunch or sundowners at the Hive Beach Cafe, where sustainably caught seafood and fresh produce reign.
