The Aviary | Luxury Self-Catering | Moreton-in-Marsh, Cotswolds

Take one sprawling 17th century farmhouse, throw in some head-turning modern flourishes, a 15-metre heated outdoor pool and a garden full of roses, and the result is one fine self-catering retreat. Set just outside the thriving market town of Moreton-in-Marsh, with roaring fires and roll tops aplenty, the allure of a Cotswolds country house break has never been so persuasive.

Luxury farm stay in Moreton-on-Marsh, Gloucestershire

Traditional Cotswold stone provides the golden foundations for some striking modern features at this former farm turned luxury retreat near Moreton-in-Marsh in Gloucestershire. Contemporary yet classic, The Aviary shows how the tender renovation of a historic home can present the best of old and new. Timber beams hang high above floor-to-ceiling windows and the sound of crackling fires call from living room after living room, providing enough space for the whole brood to breathe. Natural materials blur the lines between outside and in, tempting long rambles into the Evenlode Valley and beyond.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

The Aviary comprises a farmhouse, barn and pool room. The main house features seven bedrooms and a family bathroom; on the first floor sits the master suite with four-poster emperor bed, en suite wet room, WC and dressing room with slipper bath; the 'red room' with super-king bed; and the children's bunk room. Up a winding set of narrow stairs hides a king-size bedroom, plus two sweet singles attached by an adjoining door. A second staircase also runs from the first floor, leading to a private king-size suite with en suite bathroom.

In the garden, wildflowers sway in the gentle summer breeze and colourful camelias climb to the sky. From above, finches sing and jackdaws admire the lustre of the glistening copper pool. Children can tussle through the trees and rose bushes to discover the tipi tent and trampoline awaiting their arrival in summer, whilst the heated swimming pool, hot tub and sunken fire pit area tempts grown-ups for midnight dips beneath the silver light of the moon.

For Relaxation

While away days pottering around Moreton-in-Marsh (home to the largest open-air market in the Cotswolds) and lose all sense of time eyeing-up the vibrant local arts and antiques on offer. There's plenty to keep children of all ages amused, from bicycle hire to horse riding and clay shooting - leaving grandparents the perfect opportunity to steal some quiet time with a paperback in one of the slipper baths. On thundery afternoons, spend family time together around the glass log burner in the living area, before retreating to the emerald green cocktail room to sip homespun concoctions into the small hours.

There is ample parking for at least 10 cars at The Aviary. The modern open-plan kitchen flaunts a wine fridge, dishwasher, ice maker, large fridge-freezer, NutriBullet and proper country Aga as well as an electric Aga with four-ring hob and grill. A further en suite twin bedroom and en suite double, situated in the games barn, are available for an additional cost.

Our Take

Property Owner Andrew says

Having my morning coffee in the drawing room, with its thick stone walls and big open fire, is a great way to start a peaceful winter morning. When the sun is shining and we have the sliding kitchen doors open, it really does show the meaning of bringing the outdoors in!
