Goldhorn is a stunning Arts and Crafts manor house which fuses an inimitable grandeur with a welcoming ambience, making it an idyllic destination for celebratory escapes and impromptu weekends in the Somerset countryside. Whether looking for a creative break (there are Arts and Crafts workshops that take place within the grounds), fresh air filled escape or large space for that special family gathering, Goldhorn is the perfect country retreat.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

There’s a warmth, character and individuality to each of the four bedrooms at Goldhorn. There are two doubles (one of which has an en suite shower bathroom), a twin and a king-size master bedroom en suite from which to choose. The family bathroom has a clawfoot bath and separate shower. Each bedroom enjoys views over Barrington Court gardens and rolling Somerset countryside beyond. One-off furniture finds, well-thumbed novels and sumptuous fabrics afford a true flavour of the owner in this well-loved private home. Upon prior request and for an additional charge, there are two child-friendly single rooms available in addition to the main bedrooms.


Ensconced in truly breath-taking grounds, the grandeur of the estate and the tranquillity of the Somerset setting combine to ensure a truly unique and inspiring stay. The private gardens of this beautiful retreat combine beautifully manicured gardens with woodland and the house affords the perfect haven for wildlife explorers and nature lovers alike; keep a lookout for buzzards landing on the front lawn and regular visitations from deer and badgers.

National Trust Goldhorn is set on the edge of the National Trust-owned Barrington Court estate in Illminster; visitors to Somerset come all year round to see this historic Tudor manor house with the Gertrude Jekyll-inspired gardens, working fruit orchards, parkland (where the lucky among you might spot deer!) and ornate walled gardens. 

Blackdown Hills The Blackdown Hills on Goldhorn's doorstep have been protected as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) since 1991. Steep ridges, high plateau, valleys and springs create a charming mosaic of Somerset countryside dotted with farms, villages and ancient features. 

All Creatures Great and Small Visit the only public swannery in the UK at nearby Abbotsbury. Guests also have the opportunity to visit the tropical gardens and child-friendly zoo.

Don't Forget Your Walking Boots Fossil hunters will delight at the Somerset and Jurassic landscape; some of the rocks on Chesil beach are up to 200 million years old! Walk the Roberts' Trail, named so for the contribution that 18th century entrepreneur Richard Roberts made to the village of Burton Bradstock. A walk around Ham Hill (a huge iron age hill fort with commanding views over the South Somerset Moors, Exmoor and the Mendips) takes about an hour and is well worth it. There is plenty of parking and for those who like a challenge you can cycle there – it’s about 6 miles away.

Festivals and Events There are many events in and around Illminster; racing at Taunton Racecourse, concerts in Vivary Park, food festivals all year round, and the truly spectacular Bridgwater Carnival! Goldhorn is also within driving distance of the world famous Glastonbury festival.
