Self-catering castle for hire near Weston-super-Mare and Bristol

Restored to glory with the help of English Heritage, Thornemead Castle holds within its ramparts a treasure trove of antiques and history. Brass chandeliers glimmer from ornate ceilings, curved oak bookcases house lyrical idioms and Pugin-designed wallpaper akin to that found throughout Westminster Palace decoratively lines the drawing room. Holidays at the great British seaside will have never been so luxurious than at this gorgeous, period Grade II*-listed self-catering castle on the edge of Weston-super-Mare Golf Course.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Each of Thornemead Castle’s five bedrooms feature Victorian fireplaces, views of the gardens and king-size zip-and-link bed. The master, which sits at the top of the house on the third floor, has an en suite bathroom with overhead shower. Downstairs on the second floor, three further en suite bedrooms (one with a dreamy clawfoot bathtub) perfectly reside, with one further on the first floor, which hides a secret staircase to one of the upstairs bedrooms; great for families. There are two separate WCs on the ground and first floors.

This ten acre private estate, dotted with flamingo statues and plenty of quiet spots to while away summer days beneath the shade of a tree, offers opportunities en masse to spread out in the sounds of nature. Wander barefoot through the wildflower meadow, take a tour of the Victorian walled garden (by prior arrangement) and chat with the beekeeper who visits Thornemead Castle weekly to tend the hives. If one really must leave, the nearby Mendip Hills are a rambler’s paradise with deep limestone gorges, stone circles and cutesy tearooms serving slabs of homemade cake.

For Relaxation

After a drawn out breakfast in the jungle-inspired conservatory, tie up the laces on those trusty hiking boots and head to the coast and Brean Down. Eight-miles by foot from Thornemead Castle, the peninsula hosts a rich history and excellent walking trails above the Bristol Channel. Return from a day’s adventures to a family snooker tournament on the full-sized table before feasting on a hearty dinner of slow-cooked chicken and roast potatoes. When the lights are dimmed, retreat to the drawing room for some well-deserved hot-toddies.

There is parking for five cars at the front. The kitchen has a Rangemaster gas cooker with two ovens and six hobs and fridge-freezer. There is a breakfast kitchen with second fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. Cathie the housekeeper cleans the communal areas for two hours Monday to Friday. The owners live in an adjoining property.
