Huckleberry | Luxury Country Cottage | Unique Homestays

Huckleberry

Nevern Valley, Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK

Built from old stone and shaped by new hands, Huckleberry is a modern country home bringing Greek notions to the hills of Pembrokeshire, where city folk and foragers come to remember how life is supposed to be lived. Comprised of two earthen cottages, appointed with enormous velveteen sofas and gathering tables, conviviality is their defining characteristic. Larger groups can hire the full estate, The Milk Wood, by also booking Hiraeth.

Introduction

One wonders the origin story of woodland cottages built during the height of the Industrial Revolution, when the allure of cities brought about a rural-to-urban migration that quieted the country. A small dairy selling butter and eggs, perhaps, or a leek farm. More than a century after those cottagers hung up their caps, in walked new custodians, and so began Huckleberry’s renaissance. Kitchen cabinets licked in basil and burgundy, the spiced-honey whiff of climbing jasmine, vaulted ceilings, hydrangeas on the windowsills. Linen thrown over featherbeds, a hot tub bubbling beneath a canopy of stars, and separate spaces made for purposeful gathering. It’s all here.

Inside

Two households, both alike in dignity; one cottage and one barn, all beamed and bespoke, with separate living spaces and hardly a straight line between them. Inside them, there's microcement walls and softened angles that mimic the cavernous, cave-like interiors of the Cyclades; but alpine artworks, centennial beams, and Welsh slate nod to the Pembrokeshire rubric. At home in this minimaluxe labyrinth, good living takes a soulful turn. Spend mornings dusting sugar on buttermilk crempogs, afternoons nose-in-book, and evenings sipping Penderyn somewhere between the marshmallow sofa and skylit egg tub. You knew it as hygge; here, they call it cwtch.

Outside

What it lacks in Mediterranean climate, it makes up for in melody. A world within worlds, where wild skies carry whispers of the Irish Sea and fields lead to the storied Preseli Mountain bluestones. Master the Welsh art of the ling di long - a directionless wander - following rewilded pea pebble walkways from the front door down to the Afon Nyfer. There you’ll find a hammock slung across the wild swimming river, meant for lolling with slices of bara brith and twitching for the tangerine flash of kingfishers. Come supper, the whole troupe can descend upon the patio to grill rarebit in the rockface kitchen, before fire-pitting and hot-tubbing into the night.

From the owner

“Transforming this river valley estate has been a meaningful undertaking for us — one that has been infused with thoughtfulness and family stories — and we are overjoyed to be able to open the doors to guests.”

From the owner

Here is a place to reconnect with nature and let the gentle flow of the Afon Nyfer send you to sleep at night. A wholesome home where you can come to seek peace and restoration. The enchanting nooks, roaring fires, and deep-sinking armchairs make the interiors a magnet for those who embrace the hygge lifestyle; but outside, the woodland offers year-round opportunities for immersion in nature, forest bathing, and wild swims in the river.

Our aim was to balance cosy comfort (think warm throws, plump cushions, and places to curl up with a steaming cup of tea) with modern, luxury design principles. In the end, we were able to bring to life our vision of country cottages made for entertaining and creating memories with friends and family.

This place feels like our secret, our hideaway; and we are delighted to share it with you. Far away from the hustle and bustle, the worries of the outside world can’t reach you here. Our hope is that you find solace and magic within these walls, that you make memories within the breathtaking Welsh countryside, and that this beautiful valley becomes as etched in your hearts as it is in ours.
