The Found | Luxury Self-Catering Martello Tower | Bawdsey, Woodbridge

For a unique escape like no other, whisk the party away to this exclusive, luxury self-catering Martello tower set on the shores of the Suffolk coastline in a secluded Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From the moment of arrival via the sandy track and ascending flight of steel stairs, The Found gives the fluttering butterfly feeling of boarding a private jet. Only here it’s not about the journey, it’s all about the destination.

Luxury self-catering Martello Tower in Suffolk

The Found was originally built to defend Napoleonic forces in the 1800s and, after a stylish renovation, offers luxury self-catering accommodation with a difference. An occasion house with a capital 'O', this imposing Martello tower in Bawdsey comprises almost a million bricks wrapped around one huge central brick shaft, inviting guests to kick back over three floors of contemporary living spaces. Entering on the first floor, guests are welcomed into a circular snug area laid with shaggy rugs and stacked with logs for stoking up the fire. A spiral staircase sweeps up to the rooftop level, where floor-to-ceiling windows provide 360 degree views of the wild shingle Suffolk coastline.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

The modern-rustic design flows from the first floor down a spiral staircase to the tower’s sleeping quarters. Here lies two sharply modish bathrooms and three sumptuous double bedrooms, one of which boasts a super king-size bed. Pipes of natural light flood through the fortress’s three-metre masonry walls via angular drilled holes, whilst camera obscura project hazy outside views into the smaller bedrooms, creating a beautiful juxtaposition of elements.

The roof terrace will rival any in the city when it comes to evening entertaining. Complete with panoramic views, guests will love to mellow out on the Morroccan-style floor seating and watch as an explosion of stars pinprick the sky, casting darkness over the rolling Suffolk countryside to the west and leaving twinkly reflections in the water meadows and lagoon to the east. The small, rural hamlet of Bawdsey is 13 miles south of Orford and a 20-minute drive from the riverside town of Woodbridge - desirable holiday destinations for foodies and yachties respectively.

For Relaxation

If you can tear yourself away from living like Royals at the tower, the coastal path running below is well worth a stretch of the legs. Jog along the shingle beach past anglers, birdwatchers and kite-flyers in this designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Flicking through the selection of design books with a pot of tea by the fire after will be a fine reward. As for afternoons, hire a Big Sky classic car for the day and tear up to Ufford Park Health Spa in your vintage Morgan for a spot of pampering. Visit another listed English Heritage site (The Found is too!) at Orford Castle; the unique polygonal tower, maze of passages and turret chambers are truly captivating.

There is parking for three cars and access to the tower is through farmland by way of a private unmade farm track (better suited to 4x4s). The kitchen has all the mod cons including an electric oven, hob, washing machine, fridge-freezer, microwave and dishwasher. Please note due to the large 360 degree glass windows, the top floor will be cooler in winter months.

Our Take

Property Owner Barbara says

The 360 degree views from top floor are amazing at any point during day; whether the morning brightness, moving clouds, sun, or moon shining through the round windows in the roof. This has to be one of our favourite areas.
