Burdock Fox | Luxury Cottage | Castle Combe, Wiltshire

Wind through the village of Tiddleywink and find Burdock Fox nestled in the heart of Castle Combe. With its wisteria clad façade and knock-your-wellies-off interiors, fans of the Cotswolds are sure to adore this luxury self-catering cottage near Bath, steeped in history and oozing chocolate-box charm.

If being amidst the hub of a quintessentially English village is more your idea of a rural idyll than holidaying in the sticks, then Burdock Fox is the one for you. This luxury self-catering cotage is sat beside the village inn in the heart of Castle Combe, crowned England's prettiest village. Wonderfully eccentric, Burdock Fox is set over four beautifully appointed floors, with enough original exposed beams, roaring woodburners and roll top bath tubs to make one feel as though they are in the heart of a fairytale.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Exposed beams and sophisticated shades of Farrow and Ball provide the backdrop for the open plan master suite, in which a super king-size bed, walk-in shower and quartz stone slipper bath make for a decadently romantic boudoir where everything’s on show... Along the corridor sits the family bathroom, WC and second king-size bedroom, equally as lavish with more Emily Bond fabrics and 600 thread count Egyptian cotton linens made for entwining in. Up the spiral staircase on the second floor lies the twin bedroom.

If you can tear yourself away from the cosiest living room in town (complete with library wall, cosy sofas and tall gamebird print armchairs set around a roaring log fire), step outside to roam the picture-perfect village and surrounding countryside of Castle Combe on the doorstep. The village is famed for its film set appeal, providing the backdrop for many blockbusters including Warhorse, Stardust and the original Dr Dolittle - even the wisteria on the front of Burdock Fox was gifted to the owner from Spielberg himself! On a summer’s afternoon, the leafy courtyard garden will be the perfect spot for a game of Scrabble with a glass of rosé and plate of locally made cream scones.

For Relaxation

Country enthusiasts will be in their element on holiday in Castle Combe. The world famous Badminton Horse Trials are not to be missed in May, whilst the 17 miles of trails at Westonbirt Arboretum are worth exploring in every season. The undulating Cotswold landscape provides a great adventure for golfers at The Manor House, followed by a G&T of course. Those who prefer to put their feet up can opt to have a personal spa therapist pamper them at the house. Whatever the day's adventures bring, families will relish evenings spent cosying down on one of the sink-into sofas, and with no less than 350 films provided to choose from.

Parking for two cars. The open plan kitchen includes a Neff oven with induction hob, a dishwasher, fridge freezer and washer dryer. Due to the age and quirky layout there are steep and uneven stairs.

Our Take

Property Owner Richard says

I love the incredible inside space and winding corridors at Burdock Fox, the fact you have the ability to get lost in what is not a huge house. On a Sunday afternoon one of my favourite things is to stroll down to The Manor for a gin and tonic after playing a great round of golf.

Castle Combe This unspoilt village been crowned amongst the prettiest in England time after time, and consequently it attracts visitors from all over the world like bees to a honey pot. The small street leading from the Market Cross down to the By Brook is as if time has forgotten it, as beautiful as it was centuries ago.

Country Houses The nearby stately homes and gardens of Stourhead, Longleat and Bowood House are well worth a visit. Pack up a picnic and enjoy a fun, cultural day out for all the family.

Lacock Hailed as another of the prettiest villages in Britain by The Times this year, Lacock is famous for its historic buildings and picturesque streets. Visit Lacock Abbey in the centre of the village, a beautiful country house with monastic roots.

Fore! The stunning Cotswold valley of Castle Combe and its undulating landscape makes a fine place for a spot of golf. The Manor House Golf Club, just up the road from the house, is regarded to be one of the best courses in the South West.

Racing School Castle Combe is well known for being home to one of the longest established motor sport circuits in the UK, opening just 18 months after Silverstone in the summer of 1950. Today, the circuit offers a range of driving experiences and track days - fun for both competitors and spectators.

Spa Break With Bath within easy reach, you can experience Britain's only natural thermal waters as the Celts and Romans did over 2000 years ago. Enjoy pampering at its finest at Thermae Bath Spa; bathe in the warm, naturally mineral-rich waters and choose from a range of spa treatments designed to ease the body and soothe the mind.

Film Locations Movie buffs will be in their element on a break in the Cotswolds. Take a tour of the local area and spot the film locations for box office favourites; from the Die Another Day car chase which took place at Bourton-on-the-Water, to scenes of Pride and Prejudice shot at Luckington Court, and those of Vanity Fair filmed at multiple locations around the area.

Good enough for the Great British Bake Off, the high spec Neff oven, along with the well-equipped kitchen, will provide everything budding chefs could wish for. Get competitive with a fun-filled family "cake off" and enjoy your creations with a jug of homemade lemonade in the courtyard garden. In winter, serve up squash soup and crusty bread on the farmhouse table, before high tea by the log burner. Self-catering staycations don't get much more attractive than this!

In-House Catering

If you'd rather spend your self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you and your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

With The White Hart next door and The Castle Inn just along the road, good food and real ales are (very conveniently!) little more than a stone's throw away. A gourmet escape to Castle Combe would not be complete without dining at The Bybrook at The Manor, who promise an impressive dining experience to remember.
