Introduction

Built in symphony with the land, Verte fans out in an angular display of larch cladding from the hill on which it sits. Inside, a cathedral-like space celebrating nature and togetherness awaits, while up and down the spalted staircases, four peaceful bedrooms promise escapism. The family-owned Chevithorne Barton estate in which this luxury self-catering home resides acts as a living legacy to the owner’s father and houses a world-famous oak collection; enjoy wanders through its spring magnolias and autumnal blaze of colour on its select open days.

Inside

The open-plan living space is the hub of this magnificent dwelling, with wraparound windows peering into the nests which too have made home within the tangle of leaves. Gentle, dappled sunshine floods through on spring mornings, tempting long breakfasts on the large dining table carved from timber found on the estate. In brisker months, the modern, circular fireplace takes centre stage, crackling with comfort as the early evening darkness envelops and hoot of owls echoes between the trees.

Outside

Wildflower meadows, a woodfired hot tub, tree swings and two rowing lakes connected via a waterfall all lend themselves to some well-deserved recreation. Cool toes in the water during summer heat, engage in a family game of football on the flat lawn or simply lay beneath dappled light with a good book as the sun journeys across the sky. Further afield, Exmoor National Park promises long hikes over tors and through ravines, dips in gentle rivers and a dramatic coastline dotted with high cliffs and cosy thatched tearooms.

From the owner

“We hope to have struck the balance between elegance and fun, as it is first and foremost a much-loved home where we regularly welcome friends and family to relax and unwind.”

From the owner

The house was built between 2015 and 2018, and although there were some testing times during its construction, we feel the final result was very much worth the challenges we encountered along the way.

Verte won the RIBA South West Award in 2019 and was shortlisted for RIBA House of the Year that same year. The house is made entirely of wood, save for the steel piles which allow it to rest on the hill upon which it was built. It is entirely clad in larch, all sourced from the surrounding estate, and the large table which forms the centrepiece in the main living area was made from a beech tree that fell in a storm and was given to us by Jess' father. This same beech tree was also used to construct the stairs using a process called "spalting" which creates an extraordinary pattern in the wood.

The house is built on the Chevithorne Barton Estate, home to the world-famous oak collection started by Jess´ family. We have extended the collection into the land around the house and we hope you can find tranquillity in this slice of Devonshire heaven.
