The Old Beach Stores | Luxury Self-Catering Cottage | Padstow

The Old Beach Stores

Porthcothan Bay, Padstow, Cornwall, UK

Neatly sandwiched between the popular harbour towns of Padstow and Newquay on the north Cornwall coast, Porthcothan is a paradisaical seaside village which enjoys a gentle pace year-round. White horses canter along the horizon and soft sand dunes rise from the beach like billowing hot air balloons, offering shelter for this luxury self-catering family beach house which sits right in the bay.

Once serving as the village tearoom and sweetshop, this unique coastal abode has been extended considerably over its 100-year existence and now offers luxury self-catering accommodation to those harbouring an affiliation to this dreamy portion of the north Cornwall coast. The Old Beach Stores yields the remedying qualities of the seaside all year round. Tucked just behind the bay, it makes an idyllic base from which to experience the chic cocktail bars, celebrity chef restaurants and gentle surf, all of which compete for attention on the doorstep. That's if you can tear yourself from the private garden spa...

Incorporating contemporary beach house decor, the interior echos scenes from the bay. Coral reef wallpaper by Sanderson adorns the wall behind the L-shaped sofa in the snug and, in the master bedroom, an ocean-facing balcony invites the sea breeze to waft in under a linen canopy which hangs above the four-poster bed. Like the best Cornish homes, the light-filled dining room with its huge oak table is the heart of the house. Sliding doors lead onto the garden, a convenient place to flop in the sun after over-indulging in cream teas slathered with sweet strawberry jam.

Cornwall’s famous Seven Bays; Trevone, Harlyn, Mother Ivey's, Booby's, Constantine, Treyarnon and Porthcothan, offer a paradisiacal haven of sandy beach upon sandy beach in a tucked-away location just south of Padstow on the chiselled north coast. With ocean vistas from the balcony and access straight onto the beach from the garden, The Old Beach Stores encourages indoor-outdoor living with vigour. Teenagers can perfect their surf technique while grandparents cheer at the shore, leaving parents to fully kick-back in the indoor spa and bar area, before the whole family reunite for evenings by the singalong-inducing fire pit.

If anywhere symbolises Cornwall´s chic credentials, it is the north coast. Just south of popular harbour towns Port Issac and Padstow sits Porthcothan; a laidback village backed by towering sand dunes. This north-west facing cove is a favourite with families thanks to its gentle surf.

From the owner

“We fell in love with the amazing location and, with the help of our Devon-based architects and fantastic local Cornish builders, we transformed, modernised and extended the property to what it is today.”

From the owner

Our beloved Cornish beach house was built by Mr and Mrs Brenton in 1883. From the house, they started a small business serving cream teas, postcards and sweets and over time built this up to become the village store of Porthcothan.

As the shop became more successful, the Brenton's decided to convert their horse stables next door into a shop which is the current shop, Porthcothan Bay Stores, located down the path to the beach.

Since then the house has had a succession of owners, one of whom was born at the property and still lives in the village to this day. Grace's family lived here and ran the shop from 1935 until 1985. In 1985 the shop was sold to the Wyatts who ran the shop for 30 years, living here until their retirement when we bought the property from them in the summer of 2015.

Porthcothan Bay is a beautiful place with one of the best beaches of the famous Seven Bays along this coastline (in our opinion)!
