Introduction

Once owned by an artist who gathered shells from the beach to mould into garden sculptures and across the external walls, this self-catering home on the East Sussex coast has been the hub of the Winchelsea community from its inception in the 1940s. Now, its transformation embodies the essence of faded glamour, inspired by a travelling life where rock ‘n’ roll and busy eastern markets combine in a flurry of colour and texture. With a beatnik spirit and fearless lilt made for free-spirited souls, leave all preconceptions of seaside style at Pearl's on Sea's pick-n-mix pink front door.

Inside

Furnishings with a past life, ditsy florals found in bazaars, and antique lampshades with soft fringing throwing muted light across the rafters; this unique shack is a folksy-meets-vintage retreat on the edge of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. Wake beneath the warmth of a heavy eiderdown and pad to the kitchen to brew coffee as the low morning sun streams across the floor before sinking into one of three rolltop bathtubs before breakfast. As the day draws on, an intoxicating magic shifts and flows over the curated gallery walls and weathered heirloom rugs, revealing the blushed and aged accents throughout.

Outside

One acre of mature gardens spread out from the back of Pearl's on Sea, where giant trees offer shelter from sweltering days and the self-contained cabin covered in clambering clematis hides. However, it’s the large decking leading out from the main house where the fun really happens; a wood-fired bathtub, swing chair and round table for all to fit around sweetly under the East Sussex sunshine (along with a pool just below). If one must roam, a ten minute ramble through country lanes and past the nature reserve reservoir (temping wild swimmers to jump on in) leads to the quiet shores of Winchelsea Beach.

From the owner

“Pink windows, glam interiors and a bohemian spirit; we´ve created a home that will spark unexpected joy for every guest.”

From the owner

On the day we got the keys to Pearl's on Sea it was snowing heavily and we arrived to find that the house was in fact, off-grid (and rather chilly!).

Since then, we have poured our hearts and souls into creating a surprising home by the coast, far from the blue-and-white interiors so often found on England's shores, which have been inspired by our travels around the globe.

We think there is magic to be found in every corner here and our friends and family have spent a summer hot-footing it out of London to escape busy city living in this most quiet of spots. Even on the sunniest of days Winchelsea Beach (which is just a ten minute stroll away) barely sees another soul; we once had the whole beach to ourselves on summer's hottest day!

The shack was once owned by an artist who created a thriving community in Winchelsea, the gardens and house filled with children and their parents creating and making together. Even now, locals still remember and talk fondly of this iconic home adorned with shells by the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve.

Most of all, we hope you find something you love here; whether that's inspiration for a garden retreat or a newfound affection for each other.
