Old Monastery | Luxury Self-Catering | Burton Bradstock, Dorset

The Old Monastery

Burton Bradstock, Dorset, UK

Heady floral-scented gardens, regal living spaces and sea air combine to offer an intoxicating coastal escape at The Old Monastery. The house, originally built in 1630 as a seaside retreat for monks, sits on Dorset’s famous Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site - home to one of Britain's best beaches as voted by Condé Nast Traveller. With its divine setting in Burton Bradstock, this luxury self-catering manor is the perfect retreat for families wanting something extra special in Dorset.

This large and luxurious self-catering home in Burton Bradstock is a true coastal haven in seven acres of tranquil, private grounds. Designed by acclaimed architect Simon Morray-Jones, The Old Monastery radiates class and character, incorporating all the extravagances and mod-cons one could wish for in a luxury English mansion. Just a short walk across the fields and past the friendly dairy herd is the famous Hive beach; perfect for whiling away those long, hot summer days by the sea. Take a vintage parasol, good book and wicker hamper full of goodies, and reminisce the good old days.

The Old Monastery is a melting pot of soothing tones, sumptuous furnishings and elegant detailing. After a day on your feet, head to the sitting room and curl up in the hanging bubble chair or recline in front of the open fire in the drawing room. Following a day of country fun, the spacious dining room is the perfect place to gather over a mouth-watering repast and pop open a bottle of fizz. When it's time to retire, the three double bedrooms and three twin bedrooms, helped by a dose of sea air, provide nights of bliss.

Seven acres of tranquil grounds provide an idyllic Dorset escape for families and friends alike, with plenty of space for garden games and sophisticated soirees. On sunny days, take your ease in the unique round wicker lounger and soak in the peaceful countryside surrounds. Nestled in Dorset's peaceful Bride Valley, the gardens are met by a calming brook that wends its way to the coast. Sit a while and watch the woodpeckers and squirrels go about their business and enjoy the views over the paddocks to the village church and beyond.

From the owner

“We hope you enjoy the peaceful vibes of The Old Monastery and the tranquil garden´s heady floral scents and burbling mill stream. It is a real haven of peace and spirituality here with a modern seaside twist, unlike any other home.”

From the owner

We believe that parts of the house date back to the 15th century, when the whole Manor of Brideton (now known as Burton Bradstock) was owned by the monks of Bradenstoke Priory near Salisbury. Rumour has it that the monks used The Old Monastery as a seaside retreat!

After the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century, the manor passed through various families until it was eventually bought in the 17th century. The Pitt-Rivers estate carried out numerous extensions to the house in the early 19th century, converting it from a modest farmhouse into a more extensive manor house. The house was eventually sold to the village doctor in 1958, and we were lucky enough to buy it from one of his daughters in 2007.

Since then, we have spent five years lovingly renovating the house. Our desire was to bring a historic home bang up-to-date; turning it into a state-of-the-art modern country house whilst keeping the original charm and character intact. To do this we asked Simon Morray-Jones and his team to help us create something extraordinary. We do hope you enjoy the finished result as much as us!

Guest Testimonials

We celebrated our 45th anniversary with the family in this unique and luxurious home. We all enjoyed walks to Hive Beach, including several visits to the cafe, and the two small children have loved the local playground and of course the garden trampoline. We´ve enjoyed lunch at The Manor House at West Bexington, visits to Abbotsbury and the village of Beer, the back streets of Lyme Regis including the Old Mill Bakery, and Mapperton Gardens at Beaminster have all made our stay at The Old Monastery a truly wonderful experience!

The Old Monastery is a true delight; oozing warmth, creativity and comfort, nestled in one of England´s most charming villages. From walks across the fields to beautiful beaches with the famous Hive Cafe, antique markets in Bridport, and long walks on the front at Lyme Regis. The owners have thought of everything; a luxury welcome hamper, elegant and opulent rooms, and a warm welcome from the caretaker who is full of local wisdom! We were happy to stay in for the evenings, sit in the beautiful dining area and relax in the lounge with a huge roaring fire.

The house is absolutely beautiful. Please do thank the owners for sharing it with others - it was an absolute privilege to have spent a few days there. It´s so spacious inside that if somebody wanted some quiet time there was a choice of three living rooms, and plenty of land to play games and enjoy the basketball area. The kitchen was extremely well equipped and lovely to spend time in - again plenty of room for all 12 of us to eat together. The hamper was a lovely touch and very generous too.

Fabulous weekend and a great experience in The Old Monastery. We were celebrating a joint 50th birthday and such a lovely place to enjoy it! Thank you very much. The house is beautiful. A very memorable weekend.

This has been a perfect house to celebrate our 41st anniversary with children and grandchildren. Wonderful weather and plenty of run-around room for little ones in a lovely spacious house. The chickens provided great amusement especially when they all clustered around Jim´s van as he drove in! It has been a wonderful weekend and we shall remember it for a long time. A magical house - just fantastic.

We have had a wonderful week staying in your gorgeous home. The weather has been amazing too! Jim has been absolutely fabulous - the girls helped him feed the lambs and the chickens. It was great having him around. Thank you for letting us stay here - we look forward to returning!

What a wonderful week we have had in your gorgeous home! This house is everything we could have asked for and more. Luxury, style, comfort and enough room for our two families to be both relaxed and energetic! A true sanctuary for all! The sight of the chickens running up to greet us after a day out, the kids climbing hay bales, flying kites on Hive Beach and playing Boggle by the fire are memories to treasure! Thank you for creating such a great place and letting us enjoy it. We look forward to returning!
