Zingara | Luxury Self-Catering Country Manor | Axminster, Devon

Axminster, Devon, UK

Originally the deer lodge to Newham Abbey, Zingara was later transformed by Scottish Dame Emma Tullock who cast her vision of a fairytale castle over this unique Georgian manor house on the Devon-Dorset border. Rock’n’roll flourishes fuse with hallmarks of a remote Scottish estate to create a wildly flamboyant country home; wood floors and neon artwork reflects in polished banisters that sweep up to four exquisite bedrooms. The Jurassic Coast is right on the doorstep of this beautiful self-catering home, competing for the family’s attention but not winning by an ounce.

This is a country manor house with a tale. Many in fact. After playing host to some raucous parties for a Scottish Dame, it later became an orphanage during the war, before a hippy commune then later three beautiful family homes; Zingara being the main part of the manor house with wings on either side. The new owners' stylish touches set the tone for a truly luxurious self-catering weekend in the Devon countryside. Ornate leaded windows, stained glass and elegant arched doorways give the luxury retreat a Scottish baronial feel, but it's the clever design contrasts that really stand out, like the pink neon sign glowing the words ‘candy floss’ above the drawing room's peacock blue sofas.

Four sprawling bedrooms house huge beds, cloud-soft bedding and window seating, so guests can lie back looking out onto lush gardens. Each room is a haven of calm and all have luxury touches such as wooden shutters, statement headboards, and modern en suite bathrooms with a rainfall shower. Downstairs, a family bathroom tempts long, bubbly soaks. Down in the entrance hall a baby grand piano is waiting for tinkling tunes. Children can explore the tucked-away snug, and the living area is perfect for idling in front of an open fire. An on-site beauty salon means that Zingara really does cater for relaxation of all kinds.

Visitors to Zingara might venture no further than the landscaped gardens, crying out for family picnics and games of croquet. There's a pretty herb garden for enhancing home-cooking, and a summerhouse provides a relaxing space with a pool table, yoga mezzanine, table tennis, punch bag and power plate to kickstart the day. Not far from the site, the scenic, rolling coastline takes walkers on hikes through the surrounds, from Lyme Regis along the South West Coast Path to Charmouth beach, passing turquoise waters, pebble shores and pretty huts.

From the owner

“Zingara made our head spin the first time we saw her! She has very much dictated her own look and vibe. It has been a juggling act to complement her imposing exterior and Scottish baronial features whilst bringing her into a comfortable, stylish, fun and usable home. She has gone from drab to fab.”

From the owner

Sat on the border of Devon and Dorset we are just a stone’s throw from the spectacular Jurassic Coast and all its hidden treasures. Our house is a grand and imposing holiday home built in the Scottish Baronial style, with a magnificent façade. Grade-II listed, it was originally a Georgian house built on the site of the Deer Park for Newenham Abbey.

There are no stuffy airs and graces here, just good old fashioned hospitality. We do hope that you have a chance to enjoy the vintage markets, seaside fish restaurants and an abundance of rolling hills.

We have all your creature comforts covered from cosy nights in by our log fires to umbrellas for your countryside adventures, and even a little pampering at Wood's.

Why not treat a loved one to a meal they will not forget at River Cottage, just a short drive away. Or even spend the day fossil hunting with your close family and friends exploring what the local beaches have to offer.
