Peacock Blue | Luxury Self-Catering | Holne, Ashburton, Dartmoor

Peacock Blue

Holne, Dartmoor, Devon, UK

In the heart of Dartmoor National Park lies a sublime self-catering retreat named Peacock Blue; the haute design and stylish interiors of which wouldn't look out of place in the trendier purlieus of London or Berlin. The compelling drama of Dartmoor's wild landscape will inspire awe in all those fortunate enough to enjoy a stay in this charming and rustic luxury bolthole.

Introduction

Off the beaten track yet within easy reach of local pubs, Peacock Blue is a grown-up retreat for solo adventurers or couples looking for a luxury romantic getaway with a difference. Throw open the double doors and enjoy afternoon martinis sat atop sapphire-hued velveteen chairs watching wildlife roam, or sink in the bedroom's rolltop bath. The ponies which graze at the roadside, the swathes of rich purple heather and the imposing granite tors all offer an authentic moorland experience to relish. In the evening, snuggle up in front of the woodburner warming your toes.

Inside

The iridescent plumage of Peacock Blue's namesake was the influence for much of the interiorscape, whilst subtle use of designer fittings such as Dornbracht and Vola create a boutique feel. The beauty of natural stone walls, slate floors and original chunky beams is celebrated throughout, cleverly juxtaposed with contemporary flourishes such as gilt metro splashbacks and zingy pops of colour. For added romance, the king-size bedroom at Peacock Blue has a standalone clawfoot tub in the corner, whilst there is also an en suite wet room to rival those found in the high-end glossies.

Outside

Streams tumble over moss-smothered boulders in woods of twisted trees here in the middle of Dartmoor National Park. This luxury self-catering barn conversion is a former farmstead within a 40-acre farm, with a sprinkling of other properties nearby. The hamlet of Holne is close to the market towns of Buckfastleigh and Ashburton, where traditional inns and trendy eateries jostle for your attention over the breath-taking natural environs on the doorstep. After a day exploring the sites and sights, return home and pop open a bottle of fizz, best enjoyed around the glowing fire pit.

From the owner

“Blending the luxury expectations of a boutique hotel whilst retaining the character of a traditional Dartmoor stone barn and warm home-from-home feel was what we had in mind when designing Peacock Blue. Guests have a bird´s eye view of Dartmoor, overlooking steep wooded river valleys to the sea.”

From the owner

There is evidence of farm buildings on this site as far back as the Domesday Book and the buildings that you see today date from the 16th century with later Victorian additions. Since moving here, we have had to do extensive restoration and remodelling work on all of the buildings on the farm to get them to how you see them today.

Our aim was to convert Peacock Blue into modern and comfortable accommodation, whilst retaining the original Dartmoor charm. The interior decor was inspired by our resident peacock who showed up one day whilst we were renovating the main farmhouse and decided to make the barn his new home. Our children christened him 'Peeky' and he since chose another of the barns!

When it came to sourcing some of the furniture, lighting and interior decorative items, we are lucky enough to run our own store selling one-off bespoke pieces that we have made. With the added luxury of Siobhan being an interior designer, we are very happy with the way the barn came together and we truly hope that you love it as much as we do.

Guest Testimonials

What a fiendishly clever restoration of a barn. From the sound system to the incredible lighting and the most wonderful Velux window in the bedroom, you are left wanting for nothing. We could not wait to come back from our day trips as the house was the main event. Watching the sheep each morning and the clouds roll by makes me wonder what the rest of the world is doing. Thank you Matt and Siobhan for letting us enjoy your slice of heaven.

Thank you so much. Wonderful cottage and surrounds. We could not ask for more. We have slept, eaten and worked well! My favourite spot to sit is the peacock chair overlooking the fields beyond. Thank you again.

When looking at the beautiful pictures on the website we knew we would stay in a luxury, well designed cottage. But Peacock Blue is much more than pictures can tell! It´s the dark bedroom with the sound of the stream, the lights that pop up on entering the bathroom. It´s the beautiful dishes, those little details and more. It´s the tranquility of the countryside, the beautiful moors only a few fields away. It´s the stunning view. One evening we were watching the clouds and they looked like they were painted by Turner. We loved it, thank you so much!

We have had an amazing week at Peacock Blue; such a beautifully designed, decorated and totally luxurious place to stay. We are inspired! This is a stunning place, very magical and breathtakingly beautiful! We had rain, sleet, snow, blue skies and sunshine and have come away with some amazing memories and photos. We’ll be back to visit and stay again, until then this amazing place will be missed.

Wow, what an amazing Christmas we´ve had at your beautiful barn Peacock Blue. Your amazing interior design and attention to detail in every room have made our stay unforgettable. We were able to make a fantastic Christmas dinner in your very well-equipped kitchen - with a Christmas tree too! All the welcoming provisions where we arrived were very welcome after a long journey from London. We loved your luxurious wet room and bath in the bedroom too. We´ll have to come back one day!

We arrived late on Friday evening after a four hour journey but it was well worth it when we viewed the stunning property; a great mix of modern and shabby chic whilst preserving the character of the original barn. We ventured to the Glazebrook for an amazing meal and cocktails in another fabulously decorated place - also with a peacock!!

Thank you very much for allowing us to stay in your beautiful barn. You have created a little piece of paradise on this wild and windswept moor. We have enjoyed exploring the area with our boxer pup Milo, the break from our hectic lives was most welcome. Your generosity and attention to detail is greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for letting us share and experience your wonderful barn conversion. We have been blown away with the spectacular setting coupled with the most amazing decor, stylish furnishings and the attention to detail. We couldn’t have asked for a more comfortable and beautiful place to stay and unwind for a few days away. We really wish you ever success in your venture and look forward to coming back! It was great to meet you and the family and we look forward to visiting Peacock Blue very soon.

Thank you so much, we have had such a lovely time in your beautiful barn. Everything that we could have wanted or needed had been thought of. We really enjoyed long walks across the surrounding landscapes which are full of treasures and surprises. We enjoyed day trips to Salcombe, Dartmouth, the Otter & Butterfly Sanctuary and the Old Railway Station in Buckfastleigh which we would recommend. Despite the drizzly rain everyday we wouldn’t change a thing about our trip. Thank you for everything.

Thank you so much for a wonderful stay in your beautiful barn. Everything we could have possibly needed was provided and made our stay here even more pleasant. Some of the trips we enjoyed were a day out in Salcome (lunch at The Crab Shed was excellent) Be sure to visit to Canonteign Falls, the views are simply stunning. Walks through Bellever Forest are superb. Aside from the above we just loved relaxing at the property and making the most of our ´down time´! A great first holiday for our baby girls.

Thank you so much for your warm welcome “breakdown Service” (NB – the guests had a small accident on the way to us and put their car in a rather deep ditch – My husband went out in the torrential rain with his land rover and pulled them out) You have a wonderful, serene, secluded patch of heaven here. Peeky was a joy and the barn was second to none! Three cheers for Ruggleston Inn (Widecombe in the Moor) which served great hearty food and ale, plus watching the Morris Dancers was a rare pleasure.

We had a really lovely and relaxing few days at Peacock Blue. Your cottage is simply beautiful and perfect for getting away from our busy lives. We managed two river swims, walks along a secluded beach and a trip to the Eden Project, so we feel as if we have made the most of it! We hope lots of other guests enjoy the experience of Peacock Blue too.

We have had a lovely time staying in your beautiful home, Peacock Blue itself and the location are idyllic and perfect for a relaxing break. Our Labradoodle had a great time too enjoying long walks across the moors. The finishing touches such as fresh flowers and nibbles and your hospitality were second to none! Hopefully we will be back again next year and hope to stay a little longer.

We loved our stay at Peacock Blue. We were very impressed with your stylish and modern barn with so many special features and beautiful decoration! Some highlights of our holiday were enjoying the sun at Brixham harbour, visiting the ponies on the moor, feeding Peaky the Peacock in the morning and eating delicious pizza in Kingsbridge at the Crabshell Inn. Our little baby girl enjoyed her first holiday as well, thanks again for providing the baby cot.

What an honour and pleasure to be the first guests in your beautiful home. Peacock Blue is very comfortable and Dartmoor was a lovely surprise with so many things to discover! We would recommend a guided walk through Dartmoor and a day out at Salcombe (walk to South Sands and stop for a great lunch at the South Sands Hotel). We had a brilliant time and we are sure that future guests will enjoy it as much as we did.
