Ammonite | Luxury Beach Cabin | Winchelsea Beach, Rye

Ammonite

Winchelsea, Rye, East Sussex, UK

Shirking convention, this reclaimed 1930's cabin is a refreshing escape from the humdrum of city living. Luxuriously understated from top to toe and lovingly created by interior design duo Atlanta Bartlett and Dave Coote of Pale & Interesting fame, Ammonite's rustic interiors are a rebellious outcry against the shiny and new. A sumptuous and informal abode where families can fully relax into life on the East Sussex coast.

Introduction

Just a short drive from the shores of Winchelsea Beach, Ammonite affords a true escape from the everyday. While inside is a tale of gorgeously stripped-back coastal living and quality where it counts, outside juxtaposes a picture-perfect white picket fence with wraparound deck, perfect for chasing the sun. If you must explore, the East Sussex coastline is brimming with golden stretches of sand, waterside eateries and quaint villages. After a morning browsing Rye’s pretty, crooked streets and an afternoon on the beach at Camber Sands, come back to this rough-luxe retreat and let the feel-good atmosphere wash over in waves.

Inside

A lofty ceiling and whitewashed wood interior create a bright and breezy atmosphere at Ammonite, while soft sheepskins and a woodburning stove ensure comfort is at the very heart of this beach-style cabin. As well as the beautiful living areas, wending further inside leads you to the simple, elegant and chalky-toned master bedroom, which flaunts a squishy double bed settled under the glitter of a vintage, Gatsby-inspired chandelier. Ideal for small families or groups of friends, there is also one further double bedroom, with a zip-and-link king-size bed and exposed wooden headboards, and one double bunk room with built-in beds.

Outside

Perched on the steps of the decking with hands cradling a steaming cup of tea, enjoy the break of day and the rise of the dawn chorus as the brood sleep the morning away. After a breakfast of crumpets smothered with butter on the outdoor dining area, gather together towels and a picnic hamper and head to Winchelsea beach for a good old-fashioned day by the seaside. If it’s possible to get bored of snoozing the days away with feet buried in the sand, the charming town of Rye is just a short drive away. When the daylight begins to fade, head back and wrap shoulders in blankets, sipping crisp white wine as stars shimmer overhead.

From the owner

“We love escaping to Ammonite. The moment you walk through the door you can instantly feel all your worries slip away. The white interior panelled walls, high pitched ceiling and accents of natural wood create a calm and cosseting environment that makes you feel a million miles away.”

From the owner

We hope you love Ammonite as much as we do! We are a local family with four children and we just love the area and its copious beaches. The ancient town of Rye is one of our favourite spots with its cobbled streets, antique shops and many restaurants.

We are a husband and wife interior design team. Having each successfully worked in the magazine, photography and design industries for the last 30 years, we have produced books, interiors, furniture, products, sets, magazines features and cabins, both together and individually. We also run Pale & Interesting, an online homeware boutique store with a local branch in Rye.

Our home has been created with an emphasis on reclaimed and natural materials and we were very careful, despite extensive renovations, to keep the original charm and integrity of the building. We retained the white clapboard cladding on the exterior as white weather boarded houses are part of the south-east heritage, and we felt a great need to protect this.

Guest Testimonials

Thank you so much for a fantastic weekend! The house is beautiful and a perfect place for the family and children to be together. Lovely bedding and towels and the decor is gorgeous! We hope to be back soon.

We absolutely loved our stay at Ammonite and won´t hesitate to recommend to all our friends and family. Everything was incredible and we hope to return in the near future!

Ammonite is the most beautiful, peaceful little house. Light pours through the windows at all times of day creating a real sense of calm and the fire is so perfect for snuggly evenings. I had the most wonderfully restorative stay, reading, relaxing and watching the ducks. I left feeling truly refreshed and I will be sure to return when I am next in need of an escape from the day to day.
