The Oyster Shell

Whitstable, Kent, UK

The Oyster Shell is an architect-designed retreat combining modern luxuries with clean lines, to offer families and design aficionados an unrivalled escape on the Kent coast. Set in the fashionable maritime town of Whitstable, this contemporary home flaunts a unique steel and glass façade, framing far-reaching sea views which echo the ocean-hued interiors within.

This luxury self-catering homestay was brought to life by local craftsmen in 2013, using clever design and modern technologies to both delight and inspire. While the day away with rambles around the pretty churches and beaches, or explore Whitstable harbour town with its quirky boutiques, Michelin-starred restaurants and hidden gem cafes. Famous for its annual oyster festival, get involved in the nine-day celebration or pay a visit to one of the town’s eateries throughout the year to sup oysters and sip cold white wine. A break here offers a flavour you'll never forget.

A modern family home, The Oyster Shell is comfortably spacious and utterly inviting. Chalky grey and opulent turquoise interiors provide a cheery ambience that complements the coastal vistas. With two lounge areas, lazy mornings can be enjoyed curled up with a favourite book by the log burner upstairs, whilst after dusk, cocktails can be sipped by the flickering inset gas fire downstairs. Oozing coastal-chic style, a double and twin bedroom are located on the ground floor (both with glass doors to the garden) and a king-size bedroom upstairs boasting the added luxury of two wardrobes

Nestled down a quiet road, The Oyster Shell is just a short walk from the beach. Reconnect with Mother Nature, pushing your toes into the sand and inhaling the salty air, and let the balmy breeze float all worries away. Upon your return, the enclosed lawn is perfect for a game of bowls, while the large terrace and balcony make idyllic arenas for al fresco suppers and late night card games. The impressive glass façade and folding doors lure you onto the sunny terrace to daydream by the infinity water feature and watch cloud formations turn crimson as the sun melts into the ocean.

From the owner

“The Oyster Shell is a breath of fresh air: the perfect place to gather your loved ones close and also lose yourself to the serenity of the sea.”

From the owner

The house was built and designed by ourselves (with the help of an architect and a host of local tradesmen!) to be our very own "Grand Design" and we are thrilled with the results.

We had to contend with the wettest year ever and heavy snow in April 2013, which made the build less than straightforward, but the result is all that we wanted: light, airy and open plan - truly unique for the local area. Whitstable is my home town and while we live in London now we have always wanted to have a house near the rest of our family.

Our ambition: to be your unique home from home in Whitstable.

The Oyster Shell is a lovely light, immaculate and clean home. On Saturday at high tide we boarded the paddle steamer and sailed along the Thames to and through London Tower Bridge, a journey of 7 hours, and then returned by coach. So we were very pleased this opportunity coincided with out week here in Whitstable. We really enjoyed this scenic coastal location.

You have truly thought out everything, what a lovely property! We have had a thoroughly relaxing stay and enjoyed looking out to the sea from the balcony every single day. The weather was fantastic which complimented a very enjoyable holiday.

We have had a wonderful week here at this fantastic house! It certainly is a home from home! Every little detail has been carefully thought out to make you feel comfortable and the house is wonderfully equipped. Dave made us feel very welcome and gave us lots of valuable information about the area. He is so lovely and we enjoyed his stories very much! We would highly recommend staying here and would definitely come back, especially is we got the same weather!

The Oyster Shell comprises a very well thought out living space with lovely views out to sea. The owner was very thoughtful in providing a fantastic range of food and drinks with an honesty box if any items were used. We had a lovely time.
