Guinevere | Luxury Self-Catering Manor | Shamley Green, Willinghurst

Guinevere

Shamley Green, Surrey, UK

Unwind in style at this unique 16th century manor set within 38-acres of private grounds belonging to the darling Willinghurst estate in Shamley Green. Bohemian flair has been splashed all over the bones of this classical Elizabethan country house; a place where eccentricity and beauty abounds. Gifting views of the serene Surrey Hills and beyond, Guinevere is idyllically just over an hour’s drive from London, yet worlds away from city life.

Introduction

A unique mélange of old and new, Guinevere is a luxury self-catering manor house set within the secluded Surrey Hills. Stepping inside, the architectural grandeur is captivating, yet in contrast to the striking façade is a warm, welcoming atmosphere that immediately invites families to relax. Speaking of relaxing, R&R is highly encouraged here. Rise early and practise yoga on the enormous lawn, before tucking into healthy brunches on the patio. Afternoons are well spent perfecting your backstroke in the indoor pool or working out in the gym, later topped off with a soak in the hot tub and steam room.

Inside

Boasting space and beauty en masse, it will be tricky finding your favourite spot in Guinevere. For introverts, the opulent lounge with plush sofas and double fire will be perfect for squirrelling away with a book, whilst water-babies will have a hard time leaving the heated indoor swimming pool. Uniting all, the grand dining room is overlooked by vintage instruments and exposed beams, making an interesting place for all, while later Guinevere’s five bedrooms beckon for ultimate repose. The masterpiece master suite has panoramic views through floor-to-ceiling windows, a Philippe Starck ‘spoon’ bath and walk-in rain shower.

Outside

Fire up endorphins on the tennis court, stroll through the grounds or simply choose to lie by one of the lakes and watch animal formations float by in the clouds overhead. Whilst children will be entertained for hours, parents and grandparents can find serenity wandering through the rose gardens, picking fresh vegetables and relishing the peace and tranquillity. Tucked within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there’s a variety of picturesque walking and cycling trails to enjoy nearby too. Drink in the views, smell the fragrant pine trees and find a peaceful spot amongst the wildflower meadows for a picnic en route. There's even a wishing well, if it's possible to want for any more.

From the owner

“Guinevere has been our family home for many years and is full of our favourite things. Such a magical place, we want to share with others the joy it has given us and for guests to treat it as if it were their own.”

From the owner

Guinevere is an Elizabethan farmhouse dating back to the 16th century. It is what is known as a ‘smoke bay house’: a timber-framed house that became popular around this time and featured an early fireplace design that kept smoke away from the upstairs rooms.

The house has had a long and rich history, home to cloth-traders, farmers and also part of the Wonersh Estate until the end of the 19th century. Much more recently, Country Life published an article on Guinevere, dated 24 November 1960, which shows the house after renovations and includes photographs and descriptions of the property. The article mentions glazed doors of 'exotic design', which are the very same doors in the living room today to the garden!

Our own journey with Guinevere began when we bought the property in 2002. Since then we have fully renovated it, whilst carefully complying with the listing requirements and maintaining its authenticity. It is furnished to a very high standard with an eclectic mix of old and new, with an emphasis on particular things we love. These include antique suzanis from Uzbekistan, 19th century loom-woven jacquard paisleys, old porcelain and other curios which we have enjoyed collecting from around the world.

What a wonderful treat this has been for my children and grandchildren. Incredible, memorable and exciting! Beautiful and stylish with many delightful surprises and details. The gardens, the flowers, the tucked-away seating area, the soaps, the crockery and the decorative details, all a delight to the eye and food for the soul. With so many activities on offer and with time for relaxation, it was the perfect remedy for lifting the spirit and enjoying an unforgettable break. The owner is so warm and inviting, nothing is too much trouble.

Without a doubt, Guinevere is one of the best places we have ever stayed. A magnificent house that is cosy with sumptuous taste ~ a feast for all the senses. We spent a wonderful family weekend enjoying the comfort and beauty of each room and the surroundings. Thank you!

We had a perfect week at Guinevere! Everything is great here, and so comfortable! We will definitely have a look at the Unique Homestays website first before we book a holiday in Great Britain next time! I´m hoping to get a group together and stay for a week at Guinevere next summer! Thank you.

Guinevere had everything that we were looking for; spacious accommodation, swimming pool, steam room, hot tub, tennis court and beautiful lakes and extensive grounds for relaxing walks. The owners of the property are friendly and helpful which made our stay all the more enjoyable. We have recommended Guinevere and Unique Homestays to all of our friends!

This home was a tonic to the mind, body and soul. Every nook and cranny was welcoming, though huge, it is a family home and feels as such. The pool and gym area is outstanding and all set within breathtaking beautiful estate grounds nestled in the side of a valley. If I sound a little too lyrical then I´m still not doing it justice. The owner was there on arrival and helped to ensure we could navigate the use of her lovely home. Nothing was lacking and they somehow managed to arrange the perfect weather too. We loved every second of our stay.

The whole stay was outstanding! The owners have done a superb job on the property and made us feel so welcome. Thank you.

This wonderful house has been the dream that has exceeded all our wishes and expectations. I could not have been more grateful or more impressed by the total perfection of everything. This weekend´s memory will remain with us forever. Thank you.

Could not have loved everything about this house more! By far, one of the best weekends ever. Blown away by everything, as were my guests. India says thank you for allowing us to have the best 1st birthday party! Want to come back. What a treat.

We had an absolutely wonderful time. The house was perfect for a 70th birthday with the family, even a few friends for lunch on Saturday. Great facilities, the pool and hot tub were much enjoyed and we had brought our musical instruments to serenade with the grand piano. The kitchen is wonderful and generously supplied. The open fires were an added bonus for arriving guests. The owner is incredibly hospitable and we would love to return again in the summer.

Guinevere more than exceeded our expectations, we had a fabulous stay. Days spent walking, swimming, playing tennis and enjoying the cinema room - just perfect.

Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your wonderful home. We celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary with all our family around us and it could not have been a better weekend anywhere else. We especially enjoyed spending early mornings and late nights in the pool, and playing hide and seek on a rainy day. The beautiful gardens, BBQ dinners and hot tub were all highlights too. Hope to visit again one day.

A lovely week of memories to take home, a great place to stay with all the family to celebrate my husbands sixtieth birthday. Just a shame we cannot take the views with us.

For almost a full month we enjoyed a drawn out family reunion, different groups at different times. Everyone found great activities and magical encounters of frogs, pheasants, bunnies and prolific bird watching. Guinevere provided a most wonderful environment with lots of space,a well equipped kitchen and unique treasures in each room. Thank you for opening your beautiful house for others to enjoy, you are great hosts and made us feel very welcome.

Thank you both for letting us stay in your beautiful home. We all enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. Such a glorious setting, with quirky and interesting things. Thank you again so much.

Our stay was a surprise for my 60th birthday (no I can´t believe it either!), we were joined by our nearest and dearest and had a fantastic weekend. The house is wonderful and great for a party! The pool is a real treat and great fun. Thank you for a very memorable start to my 7th decade, as I was kindly told today.

Thank you for letting us stay in your wonderful home, it´s stunning. A perfect property and glorious location for a family gathering. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it and are totally relaxed as we leave. Thank you again.

Guinevere is everything I imagined and more, it is the most incredible house and I was absolutely blown away by the whole estate, it has everything you could ever want or need. From rejuvenating morning swims to long country walks, it’s hard not to fall in love with this exquisite house.

Many thanks for a wonderful stay. We will be back!
