Faerie Door Cottage | Luxury Self-Catering | West Overton, Wiltshire

Faerie Door Cottage

West Overton, Wiltshire, UK

Thatched with golden wheat straw and sprinkled with magic, Faerie Door Cottage is a dreamy nook plucked straight from the pages of a book. West Overton provides an idyllic village setting for luxury breaks in Wiltshire, and once you've stumbled upon this humble country cottage with its pretty gardens and scrumptious interiors, you will already be planning your return.

Introduction

Wander down the church path in the charming village of West Overton and discover this little pot of gold at the end of the lane. A fairytale cottage with a grown-up guise, this luxury self-catering retreat is set in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside. Inside, muted pinks and lavender minks soften the heavy oak beams and terracotta stone floors, which glow a warm ginger beneath the two flickering log fires. With country walks all around and the classy market town of Marlborough nearby, both ramblers and trendsetters will be perfectly at home here.

Inside

The quirky design of this 17th century cottage is sure to charm. When winter casts its frosty spell, light the woodburners and let the atmospheric glow warm you from your toes up. In summer, open the door in the olde-worlde kitchen and let the fragrant country air float in. With plenty of space for socialisation and relaxation, everyone can find a corner of their own. When thoughts turn to bed, two spindly staircases lead up to the dreamy first floor; the first arrives in the master king bedroom, whilst the other takes you to the cosy snug area and zip-and-link bedroom.

Outside

High teas in the garden on clement afternoons will be the order of the day. Or, if you feel like stretching your legs, the owners provide outdoor crockery and a blanket for those who want to find a picnic spot in the country. After a lazy Sunday morning, take the scenic two-mile walk through Kennet Valley to the Outside Chance and tuck into their legendary roast beef dinner. For a splash of enlightenment, there is plenty for history-lovers and culture-vultures to see close by including the mystical stone circle at Avebury along with Stourhead, Lacock Abbey and Longleat House.

From the owner

“We love sitting in the kitchen armchair in winter with a glass of wine and chatting to the chef while the terracotta tiles glow in the light of the woodburner! In summer there is nothing prettier than our garden, planted with a bright assortment of flowers and rich with floral scents.”

From the owner

Faerie Door Cottage was originally built somewhere around 1700. During renovations in 1996, a piece of parchment was found in the roof that was dated 1735. You can see this very piece framed on the upstairs landing!

The parchment features repeated lines in a beautiful copperplate hand, inscribed with "adversity makes a man a wife" on the front, and "be less confident and more diligent" on the back. This suggests that someone was practicing the art of handwriting, or even writing out lines as a punishment for misbehaviour!

The house is built of flint and Sarsen stone on a frame of oak beams and thatched with combed wheat straw. It was once four tiny farm workers' cottages, with just one room upstairs and one room down. Luckily, it's now a little more spacious! You might like to see if you can work out where the joins were. Since then the cottage has had a succession of owners, of whom we're the most recent. A photograph of how the house looked in the 1920s hangs in the utility room; you'll see how little it's changed.

Guest Testimonials

My parents came all the way from Columbia to visit and I wanted us to have a quiet break in the countryside. Faerie Door Cottage could not have been more idyllic - we felt like we were in a movie! The house is adorable, impeccable and perfectly equipped. The garden is beautiful and Debbie was so charming and helpful. Thank you for sharing your gem with us!

Our first time in an oldie worldie cottage. What a charming place. A magical stay, so peaceful. We had forgotten how sweetly birds could sing, how enchanting the wind in the trees! And a picnic with just a few drops of rain, what fun! This is indeed a special place.

All of the ´escape to the country´ shows we´ve watched still didn´t prepare us for how lovely our stay would be at Faerie Door Cottage. We came here to celebrate a 93rd birthday, and her favourite colour is purple so she enjoyed the sitting room decor very much! We loved the style and decor throughout the house, and all the colours of the garden. Thank you for the food basket and for employing such a knowledgeable and kind housekeeper!

Fantastic week in an amazing cottage; so good we barely left and we were even hoping to get snowed in! We did manage to enjoy a few of the owners personal recommendations for local eateries which was a real treat; The Outside Chance was great for a Sunday roast, Cobbs Farm Shop was perfect for local produce and The Harrow for top quality lunch! Thank you very much.

Thank you for a wonderful stay. It was a lovely first holiday with our 12 week old daughter. We enjoyed a potter around Malborough and baking scones for our cream tea in the garden! The cottage is beautifully appointed; what lovely taste you have. Thanks to Debbie for a lovely welcome and for lighting a nice, cosy fire!

It has been the most wonderful and unforgettable experience. The cottage is amazingly kept and well equipped in every small detail. We had such a wonderful time and enjoyed every minute of our stay. We shall definitely recommend this gorgeous place to our friends without any hesitation.

Thank you for a lovely stay. The cottage is charming and you have everything you would need, the kitchen in particular is really well equipped. We wish we had been able to stay for longer as it´s a lovely place and area to relax. The Bell Pub is definitely worth a visit. Thank you to the housekeeper also, for the warm welcome.

We desperately needed relaxation away from our busy schedules, in a home from home. Your cottage is just stunning and so well equipped. We absolutely loved the views and the log fire, along with our little Jack Russell Murphy. A beautiful part of the country that we would definitely recommend.

Faerie Door Cottage is the most wonderful home from home, set in such an interesting part of Wiltshire. The cottage is so beautifully decorated and an inspiration to return home to redecorate. We visited Lacock, a must day out for everyone. It has been a fantastic few days to wind down. Thank you so much.

The only word for this cottage is enchanting. Beautifully kitted out with everything you could possible need to have a wonderful relaxing holiday. We had an amazing week at a quintessential English cottage. thank you for sharing it with us.

Faerie Door Cottage was absolutely amazing and I doubt we will find anything to beat it. We haven´t stayed in a holiday cottage for years but will very probably try another Unique Homes Stays property because our experience this time was so good - although I think by staying in Faerie Door Cottage we´ve set the bar too high!! Thank you so very much. The hamper was a wonderful gift to help us enjoy our time at the cottage with all the goodies it contained.

We loved the attention to detail at Swallowtails, it felt as if someone had really thought through how to make the cottage feel like home rather than just a stay in a holiday let.

Wow! What a beautiful cottage! We loved the special touches like the Easter decorations, bathrobes and wonderful welcome pack. There is a very homely feel which encourages you to settle in immediately, warm weather enabled us to take full advantage of the gorgeous garden and we enjoyed many evenings paying boules on the main lawn. The kitchen is very well stocked, and every room has a lovely, cosy feel. Stunning views over the county, bluebell woods and mellow meadows await you. Thank you so much for sharing your home, we had a fun and relaxing stay.

In all of the places we have both travelled and stayed, this is by far the most lovely. As we explored Wiltshire, we wanted to cut our stay short and come home to the cottage. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us! Thank you all for sharing your tips too!

We could not have enjoyed our stay more! Such a beautiful, warm and cosy cottage to enjoy our first trip to the UK. Thank you for the lovely welcome and for the pristine cottage. The food hamper was absolutely wonderful and such a treat! Thank you again for a perfect stay in your beautiful cottage.

Wow! This is a beautiful cosy cottage with everything you could wish for! Lovely to have the fire which we used of an evening (thank you for the marshmallows). We visited Marlborough for shopping, Avebury for a good walk around and Stonehenge for a bit of history. The Bell had really good food. Thank you for making the cottage comfortable and spotless.

This is an amazing property, even in the winter! The decor is beautiful, the beds are very comfortable and there is everything you need to cook. The location is great and so easy to drive to Marlborough and other local sites.

What a lovely weekend away! Sad to be going home, but we´ll definitely be back. The cottage is stunning, so many thoughtful touches. Loved the marshmallows in particular.

Had a really relaxing week in your lovely, cosy cottage. Beautiful decoration throughout the cottage. Hope to return in the summer when the weather is not so wet, when we can enjoy the garden more!

Unique Homestays you have found another little gem! When we walked in on a dreary Nov afternoon, we went WOW! The sitting room looked so classy and cosy. The bedroom was so luxurious and warm; with twinkling ´faerie´ lights, rugs and throws! We loved snuggling up by the log burner and loved the linen sheets. Just the most perfect place for a winter break with so much to see and do in the area. Thank you

We have had a fantastic few days at Faerie Door Cottage. Such a beautiful, cozy, relaxing place to unwind. Stunning decoration- have definitely got a few ideas for our own home! Lovely welcome and great recommendations! Looking forward to visiting again to eat more marshmallows by the fire! thanks for an amazing stay!

We all were amazed at the care and welcome we had on our visit to Faerie Door Cottage and wanted to say how we really appreciated it! Thank you so much. The warmth of judging us all just right to start with, it was our youngest grandchild´s first holiday away from home and we were wondering how she´d settle in a new bed. But not a problem, the fairies looked after her! It is a part of this country we all love and I´m sure we shall come back to you again.

We have had a wonderfully relaxing week here in the cottage. We have not been disappointed! Spending our days going for peaceful walks and then coming back to warm up by the fire! The cottage is so welcoming and has everything you would need.

I was very impressed that Becky the housekeeper had bought us a gluten free loaf of bread after I had asked about gluten free items in our welcome hamper. This was very thoughtful. The cottage was lovely and we felt very spoilt staying in such a nice place for the weekend. We also found the recommendations for local restaurants very helpful in the house book.
