Romney Marsh, NR Rye, Kent, UK

Romany promises a refreshing self-catering cottage escape in Rye, where flower children can waltz freely to the rhythmic beat of their untamed hearts. Hidden behind a meadow of swaying grass and with a hot tub settled between headily-scented herbs, here is a luxury beach style cottage where one can run to in search of wild abandon, exploring the remote countryside, long beaches of Winchelsea and tidal creeks of Romney Marsh.

Introduction

Designers Dave Coote and Atlanta Bartlett have created a true back-to-nature cottage retreat near their home in Rye, a secret cabin which welcomes guests to fall into step with the gentle tempo of Romney Marsh. Epitomising pure relaxation, there's a laid-back feel to the interiors, think winter nights curled by the woodburner and lazy summer mornings breakfasting in the cottage garden. At this romantic self-catering cottage hideaway you'll feel far-removed from the everyday.

Inside

Vintage fabrics and carefully curated finds form the basis of this inspiring interior scheme. Within this light-filled abode, the open-plan living space exudes a bohemian edge. With an eclectic and design-led edge and no compromise on comfort or indulgence, Romany is an uplifting space that embraces its whimsical setting. Designed with romance in mind, the luxury bedroom at this couple's retreat features a striking chandelier and clawfoot bath, oozing an inimitable vintage glamour.

Outside

A white picket fence, a colourful flower and herb garden and a hot tub for two tucked away far from view; Romany’s outdoor space offers a taste of The Good Life. Complete with orangery summer room, you'll idle many an hour away on the daybed before enjoying a lazy sunset supper of local cheese and fresh bread under the pear tree. If you can, step outside your Romany bubble and discover the unique landscape that  Romney Marsh has to offer.

From the owner

“The cottage is perfectly situated for you to enjoy the stunning countryside and the gorgeous Romney Marsh - also known as the Fifth Continent - with its wide open vistas, special micro climate and proximity to miles of beautiful coastline filled with wildlife and beaches.”

From the owner

We have lived on Romney Marsh for 15 years and totally adore it. At times it is like an onslaught to your senses with fragrant smells of rape fields in the spring, wheat in the summer and the rich marshy earth in the winter. In the summer we wake every day to the sound of birdsong, the roar of the poplar trees and the extraordinary 'chorus' of the marsh frogs.

Romney Marsh is a nature lovers paradise; bats, foxes, badgers, mink, stoats, water voles, hares, field mice and moles are all welcome residents here while birdwatchers flock from all over the world to catch a sight of the amazing and rare array of birdlife from marsh harriers, kestrels, nightingales, cuckoos, herons, cormorants, woodpeckers, and barn owls.

Rare sightings include honey buzzards, European serins and purple herons. Romney Marsh is also home to the much protected great crested newt and many endangered insects... and we have it all in our back garden!

This is a land of smugglers, shipwrecks (the local pub was once a smugglers inn), long walks, cycling, birdwatching, beaches, windsurfing, fishing (you can catch mackerel off the beach at Dungeness) and all only an hour and a half from London.
