Supposedly the birthplace of the legendary King Arthur, Tintagel’s crowning glory is its stunning cliff top castle. This crumbling Cornish castle clings to the black granite cliffs between Tintagel and Trebarwith Strand, attracting wheeling gulls and hordes of visitors in summer who want to experience the magic of this mythical village.

Tintagel in North Cornwall Visit outside of season and experience a quieter side to this popular tourist destination. As well as the usual trinket shops and little arcade, there is still plenty of natural beauty to be found in and around Tintagel. The secret cove of Bossiney Bay, with its quite sand beach and turquoise waters, will rival any in Cornwall. Head to St Nectan's Glen for an otherworldly outdoor experience - this sacred site of AONB and SSSI is just around the corner and not to be missed. See how the River Trevillet has carved its way through slate to form a spectacular 60ft waterfall. The locals even claim to have been pixies and fairies here, but we'll leave that to your imagination.

Self-catering holidays in Tintagel Though the Arthurian links may be tenuous, there's no doubt that Tintagel is a very fine spot for a fortress. In fact, this entire width of coastline that hugs this Cornish village is quite something. Trails lead along the headland to the atmospheric medieval chapel of St Glebe's, and walk far enough in both directions and you’ll stumble across two of north Cornwall’s best secret beaches in whatever direction your feet take you. Trebarwith Strand boasts great surf alongside a delicious local café and cliff top pub called The Port William – the perfect place for a sundowner overlooking the sea. The village itself has a number of traditional Cornish tearooms, pubs and bakeries which make self-catering breaks simple and fun. The biggest dilemma will be choosing your favourite ice cream parlour or cream tea garden!
