Introduction

Honeyed Jurassic Hamstone brings warmth and character to Butterfly House, occupying the grand west wing of a luxurious 16th century manor house in Sherborne, Dorset. Set within the grounds of a former butterfly farm which provided the silk for Princess Diana’s wedding dress, this elegant home is chock-full of historic charm and has been lovingly restored, fusing original period features with contemporary class. Flaunting a 250-foot private garden and mulberry-purple cinema room, there's lavishness inside and out.

Inside

Start long weekends buried beneath thick duvets, hands wrapped around a steaming mug and Sunday paper. Home to seven swoonsome bedrooms decorated with fine linens and chinking chandeliers from Florence, everyone in the party has their own sumptuous cocoon. Evenings are best enjoyed in the cinema den, hunkering down for private screenings of family favourites, whilst the drawing room has an original restored bookcase filled with fascinating reads. In winter months, feel the warmth of the roaring jet-master log fire as the competition heats up with an evening of board game marathons.

Outside

Summers here are made for country escapades. Family picnics of dainty sandwiches and cricket innings on the lawn make for afternoons of bliss. During the day, the clever landscaping of yew and beach hedges direct focus to the breathtaking horizons over Sherborne countryside. As the sun dips, strategic lighting illuminates the front façade, showcasing Butterfly House in all its majesty. Cocooned by eight acres of gated grounds and boasting direct bridleway access, Butterfly House provides the perfect equestrian escape where you can canter through the Dorset countryside in the company of your own horse.

From the owner

“The house has added an extra dimension to our lives. We gather here as a family as often as we can and relish our visits to Dorset and the wonderful times we have at Butterfly House.”

From the owner

Having lived in central London for the last 25 years, my husband and I had been looking for a country retreat without success. We had started to give up when one day I came across an advert and just knew it would be perfect. I travelled to view Butterfly House the very next day. It was in a terrible state, but it just felt like it was one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

On a freezing day in February 2006 work began to turn a disused and unloved butterfly farm into a contemporary country retreat. Everything had to be replaced, a new roof, oak sash windows, ceilings and cornices, fireplaces, electrics, plumbing, most of the floors. The work took 18 months with many ups and downs, but the results have been worth the wait.

From local craftsmen who have made much of the furniture, to purchasing the chandeliers in Florence, we carefully considered the finish and fittings, fabric and furnishing to create our perfect family home. We have fallen in love with the area and hope you enjoy the house as much as we do!

Guest Testimonials

We were all extremely happy with our stay at Butterfly House, the property is divine and in such a beautiful spot! The goodies in the fridge were delicious too! Such a lovely touch. We were all so relaxed so thank you again for sharing your wonderful home with us.

We had a fabulous time at the Butterfly House, it was an ideal setting for our family reunion and catered perfectly for all family members (who ranged from 8 month old twins to 90 year old great grandparents). The house is beautiful - imposing and handsome from the outside but welcoming, modern and homely on the inside. It has been renovated to a very high standard and is fitted with high-end furniture, appliances and thoughtful little extras, it was like staying in a luxury boutique hotel all of our own.

Well, we´ve all had an absolutely fantastic time here in the Butterfly House.Never has a building been full of such wonder , charm and exploration. From the smell of the flowers as soon as we entered , our senses have been taken on a beautiful ride. Walks in the country nearby, roaring hot fires, beautiful dimly - lit dinners and a magnum of champagne to toast the wonderful week that was, all because of you! Thank you very much for sharing this treasure.

´What a fabulous place to host a (belated) 50th birthday celebration. We certainly had enough space and the setting is idyllic...quintessentially english which we added to by playing rounders and cricket on your "village green". Despite the now aching muscles we had a beautiful time in an extraordinary home. Returning to our somewhat more compact residences will be a shock!  Thank you

Fabulous property - perfect for a large family get together, despite the rain, we had a wonderful time. It was great to have access to the books and games too and the cinema room went down a treat with the children too. The deli was fantastic and the local pubs and Sherborne itself were lovely.
