Hawkhurst | Luxury Self-Catering Holiday Home | Rye, East Sussex

For families who do like to be beside the water, Hawkhurst offers a luxury self-catering holiday home in an enviable position right on Rye Harbour. Once used to imprison the drunken sailors of Rye, this legend-laden 19th Century watch house has been transformed into a calming oasis of whitewashed interiors, vintage furnishings and pared-back style.

Luxury self catering in Rye

Possibly the quaintest town in England, Rye's medieval buildings and cobbled streets are a feast for the eyes. Just downstream in Rye harbour sits this iconic black-coated family home - quite the head turner amongst its timber-clad neighbours. Hawkhurst was once used to spy on trespassing smugglers and enemies and today the former watch house has lost none of its maritime charm, exuding character and contemporary coastal style. This tranquil hideaway is ideally located just two miles from Rye town and six from Camber Sands, meaning it's perfectly placed for luxury self-catering holidays, promising seaside fun by the bucket and spade-full.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

The illuminating interiors are a stark contrast to the blackened brick exterior. Rooms are flooded with coastal light and each of the bedrooms is stylishly simple. The ground floor is home to a WC and spacious king-size bedroom which enjoys garden views. Up the number-stamped staircase, there are two further king-size bedrooms along with the family bathroom which is complete with a roll top bath and separate shower.

Take delight in numerous seating areas amid the cherry and apple blossoms, offering both sunny and shady spots for long, languid lunches and alfresco suppers on hazy summer days. As evenings draw in, gather around the fire pit for story-telling and savour family time wrapped in blankets toasting marshmallows. With its lost-in-time cobbled street, terracotta-roofed boutiques, ancient inns and upmarket restaurants there is no prettier place than Rye to explore. This former smugglers town is a history aficionado’s favourite!

For Relaxation

Guests are spoilt for choice with two light-filled living areas at Hawkhurst. The ground floor sitting room has bi-fold doors opening onto the garden, making it a firm favourite with the younger ones, whilst the white washed second-floor living room offers calming views over the lifeboat house and beyond; the perfect antidote after a day navigating the cycle paths and walkways of the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. For true escapism, climb the secret staircase to the watchtower, once used to spy on thrifty smugglers and now only the best seat in the house for spotting the passing Oystercatchers, Redshanks and Lapwings.

Hawkhurst is well equipped, with a washer-dryer, dishwasher, double oven, microwave and fridge with freezer compartment. There is parking for one car, with free spaces available in the pub car park nearby.

Property Owner Jonathan says

The gentle sea breeze, the warm afternoon sun flooding the downstairs living room, the sounds of the sea birds calling one another over nearby rooftops, the sails appearing over the horizon like man-made shark fins; all these combine to give a true feeling of serenity here at Hawkhurst.
