Scarlet Hall | Luxury Self-Catering Manor House | Chester

Scarlet Hall

Malpas, Chester, Cheshire, UK

Set down a sweeping drive within the grounds of a sprawling 12-acre estate, Scarlet Hall is the perfect marriage of rural meets regal. Within its timber-framed wisteria-clad walls lies a wealth of history spanning farm tales, princes and Italian prisoners of war held captive in WWII. With a heated indoor pool, sauna and abundant gardens, this large and luxurious self-catering manor house in Cheshire offers one fine English escape.

Introduction

A home and farmstead since the 1640s, this Grade-II listed country manor in Cheshire is a home where relaxation, fun and time spent together are centre-stage. Lap the indoor heated swimming pool before breakfast, warm bones in the infrared sauna and challenge friends to a game of snooker over a tipple or two. On midsummer evenings, gather around the firepit under a darkening sky and in winter, gather in the cinema room for family favourites. The large open-plan kitchen and living room provide beautiful and informal space to make meals, have long, late night conversations and warm toes by the fire.

Inside

Spread between the main building and the coach house, Scarlet Hall can sleep up to 22 in 11 luxurious bedrooms. In the main house are two super king-size beds, two king-size beds and two zip-and-link beds; each flaunting an en suite shower or bathroom with underfloor heating. In the coach house, there are three zip-and-link bedrooms (two of which are connected to a Jack and Jill shower room), a king-size bedroom and one double. There is one family bath and shower room in the coach house, along with one further shower room and two more downstairs in the swimming pool complex.

Outside

Settled in the centre of 12 acres with a meadow for sprawling between the flowers to watching clouds make shapes above, Scarlet Hall’s grounds are as plentiful in colour as they are in size. Send children, big and small, for a kick around in the adjoining field while wine and conversation flow on the suntrap patio. On hot summer days, grab a blanket and sweetheart by the hand and make tracks towards the shaded orchard. Further afield Tatton Park, home to a 1,000-acre deer park, is eagerly awaited by both two and four-legged family members for leisurely strolls in the fresh air.

From the owner

“The house has a lovely homely feel, it´s amazingly bright and sunny for a 17th century timber-framed building. Cleverly redesigned mixing an open-plan layout with traditional features, it creates a feeling of space and flow. You get views from all sides, from sunrises to the magnificent sunsets.”

From the owner

Scarlet Hall was originally built circa 1640. It is a timber framed building with close boarded timber panels which were used in this period as a sign of affluence. Over the generations the house has been encased with brickwork.

We were fortunate enough to purchase this gem in 2004. We were looking for a project to create a family home in the country to bring up our two children. So, when this came up for auction we jumped at the chance, probably not thinking too much about the enormity of the project! Fortunately, we have enjoyed renovating properties before and so we relished this opportunity and it has taken 14 years of careful restoration to create this haven for our family.

The manor house has been decorated with calming, warm neutrals which complement the many timbers and beams. Although this house has origins from the 17th century, it has many modern-day touches which provide a light, bright and very comfortable environment.

Scarlet Hall has been a place for our family to gather and celebrate birthdays, Christmas, New Year and special weekends! As the inscription found in an old chimney says, "Ye Friends Meeting House" and that is what this house represents to us.

Beautiful imagery on the Unique Homestays website but it still does not do this place justice. Stunning, with attention to detail which is evident at every turn. There was nothing we wanted for, from comfortable beds to well equipped kitchens, sports equipment, swimming pool, cinema room, plenty of lounges and chill out areas. Not to mention the barn. We´ve sung, danced, laughed and cried (the good, happy kind of crying)! Memories have been made here which will last a lifetime! From ages 3 to 80, we have all had the time of our lives!
