Maberly

Chillington, Kingsbridge, Devon, UK

Simple elegance reigns at this luxury self-catering house near Kingsbridge, where the freshest of air and slow cadence of life allow deep relaxation in rural south Devon. Home to wildflower gardens, soothing interiors and no sound but nature to interrupt thoughts; if there was ever a house which was good for the soul, this gorgeous period home named Maberly is it.

Introduction

Oh, the stories this house could tell! Built in the 16th century from Devonshire granite and slate-stone quarried nearby, this Georgian Grade-II listed home has stood strong in statement and stature throughout the ages. From a tenanted estate, to thriving 178-acre farm, to family-home for 22, there is little these walls haven’t seen. Now, Maberly offers an uncomplicated escape to Kingsbridge and the South Hams where nothing matters other than cherished family mealtimes and trips to the beach.

Inside

Calm and filled with soft fabrics and mellow hues, Maberly’s master bedroom has a super king-size bed and Jack and Jill en suite with bath and shower. The first floor is also home to two more king-size bedrooms, while up the gorgeous Chinese lattice Chippendale staircase to the second floor are two super king-size zip-and-link bedrooms which share a Jack and Jill en suite. On the third floor there is one double and one Goldilocks bedroom with three single beds, perfect for children’s bedtime stories.

Outside

The acre of restful gardens surrounding Maberly offers a peaceful refuge in rural Devon. Play hide and seek with little ones in the colourful walled garden, recline on thick Moroccan fabrics on the manicured lawn and sip sweet sundowners in the evening light at the front of the house. For guests who cannot bear to stay still, the lawn is just as good for croquet and garden games as it is for afternoon naps. Nearby East Prawle has coastal trails leading to small white-sand beaches with turquoise lagoons.

From the owner

“For us, this is the perfect place to spend precious, memorable times with family and friends, who describe life at Maberly as a tonic for the soul, a place where life feels good. The elegant simplicity of the house and gardens mean fresh air, a sense of space, incredible sunsets, and cosy fires.”

From the owner

We have always loved the elegant simplicity of the house and gardens and treasure what it means to everyone who spends time here: a chance to relax, to enjoy fresh air, a sense of calm and space, incredible sunsets, sunny days in summer and cosy fires in winter.

Maberly was first recorded as a property in the late 14th century in a manorial survey of Stokenham, which was received by Katherine Parr in her dowry from Henry VIII upon his death. The oldest part of the current house - what is now the dining room - was a simple 16th century dwelling. The main house that you find today is a classic early Georgian farmhouse, built in the early 1700s by the owner of the local slate quarry.

We bought Maberly in 2014 and have spent several years lovingly creating a comfortable, cosy-yet-spacious home for family and entertaining. The perfect retreat, it is also the ideal base for exploring all there is to see and do in the local area. We hope you enjoy it just as much as we do.

We had the most amazing weekend at Maberly! Lots of laughs, fun, food and chats. Gold stars all round!

We´ve had an oh-so-memorable week at Maberly. Crab sandwiches, the fly-by at Dartmouth, and the comfiest bed in the world. We had a wonderful time. Thank you!

Maberly has the best of everything. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. We really didn’t want to leave!

We enjoyed, loved and worshipped every minute here. Thank you in the name of all my family for sharing this wonderful house of yours with us!

A lovely place with gorgeous rooms. Plus a fully stocked fridge filled with goodies. We are loving it here already and we´ve only just arrived!

Maberly was the dream retreat in the South Hams! Everything we could possibly have wanted was to hand, and it was the perfect home for a family with young children to spend time together. Although close to the coast, we could barely drag ourselves away from the big, soft sofas, warm kitchen and sunny garden. We made apple sauce from the windfalls in the orchard, enjoyed long soaks in the bath and indulged in rich cream teas in the autumn sun. We can´t wait to return!

Maberly certainly surpassed all of our expectations, it was the family home that we had wanted for our weekend away. The house was beautifully presented and an exceptional welcome pack was provided upon our arrival. My daughter enjoyed playing with the dolls house and also made use of the arts and crafts equipment which were also provided. Thank you once again for allowing us to make such special memories in your beautiful home!

Maberly was idyllic. The house has a lovely, homely feel and was so very relaxing. There are so many beautiful touches which have all been carefully thought out. We loved the fabulous location, Salcombe and hope Hope Cove are very special and we´d love to return.
