Kilnwood | Luxury Self-Catering Farmhouse | Wells, Somerset

Tucked into the rolling Mendip Hills and with views of Glastonbury Tor, Kilnwood is a rustic retreat in the heart of rural England. Restored from a life of labour into a luxury family home, the sensitive renovation of these former farm buildings meld organic materials with polished finishes. Make forever memories in the gardens, with not a care in the world but whoever’s turn it is to rouse from their sunbed to craft the next round of chilled mojitos.

With its terracotta roof and weathered charm, Kilnwood near Wells is a countryside escape with a contemporary edge which wouldn’t look an ounce out of place in the heart of Tuscany. With plenty of space for the whole family to unfurl in and miles upon miles of undulating hinterland reaching out in every direction, here is a home where free-range families, so often restricted by traffic jams and timetables, can set themselves free.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Six bedrooms allow for 12 guests to sleep soundly at Kilnwood. In the main house on the ground floor there is one double bedroom with king-size bed along with a fun children’s bunk room, a bright twin bedroom, a family bathroom with bath, shower and WC and a separate WC. Upstairs on the first floor, guests will find the master bedroom, with king-size bed, Juliette balcony and far-reaching views across bucolic Somerset, and a family bathroom with roll top bathtub and separate shower. There are two further bedrooms in The Pottery; one twin and one with king-size bed, and a bathroom with shower and large freestanding bath overlooking the countryside.

With a heated outdoor swimming pool, play area and two acres of gardens to keep the little ones entertained for days, grown-ups are free to lounge to their heart’s content. Throw down a blanket in the shade of a twisting willow tree with a paperback before idling back to the al fresco dining area for a barbecue lit by burning sunset skies. As the heat begins to fade, gather blankets from the house and congregate around the hidden fire pit, toasting s’mores and telling campfire tales long into the night.

For Relaxation

Somerset days were made for adventures, so with hiking boots strapped on feet and backpacks filled with treats, head out into the Mendip Hills in search of faery rings and cavernous gorges. When little legs are weary, rinse off in the steaming outdoor shower or retreat to the comfort of Kilnwood, where noisy table football tournaments take place in the annexe and movie marathons make for snug winter nights in the television room. On summer evenings as the sun sets, slip into the pool for secret dips long after the children have been tucked up in bed.

The property is accessed via a shared drive and there is parking for up to five cars within Kilnwood. Please be mindful that the property is within close proximity to farms and neighbours. The gardener will endeavour to service the fully-enclosed gardens and pond on changeover days, but may need to visit the property at other times. The rooms in The Pottery are not available with the smaller group option.

Our Take

Property Owner Maria says

Over the decades the barn has swapped hands between farmers, gardeners and potters. We bought it in 2016 after years of living in London and coming on short breaks to Somerset to escape the city. As parents to five children, we love getting away to this amazingly beautiful part of the world.
