Labyrinth | Luxury Self-Catering Hunting Lodge | Lickfold, Petworth

Oh, if walls could talk! Built in the 1300s with traditional wattle and daub and embellished with the ruins of nearby Verdley Castle, Labyrinth was once the grandeur hunting lodge for Oliver Cromwell and his senior army generals. A little piece of British history nestled into the West Sussex landscape, spend days rambling across rolling hills before returning to spend nights sunk into the al fresco hot tub.

Introduction

Settled in the leafy hamlet of Lickfold, just a short jaunt from popular Petworth, lies a crooked cottage with twisting timber beams and throngs of stories centuries old. Peer through layers of the past with carvings of cavaliers etched into the walls from Cromwell’s days of warming by the fire, exposed original foundations and glass-covered steps leading down to the long-lost basement. Along with a heated outdoor swimming pool and extensive landscaped gardens, this luxury self-catering home brings together the old and the new in perfect matrimony.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Four characterful bedrooms fill the first floor of Labyrinth, each with deep colours and soft throws strewn across the beds, perfect for wrapping up in after chilly winter rambles. The master suite, with super king-size bed, living area and en suite with bath and separate shower nestles in the eaves of the house, while two further super kings and one twin bedroom with en suite bath and handheld shower offer snug retreats overlooking the gardens. Along with the bedrooms, there is one family bathroom on the first floor, with bath and separate shower. There is also a twin room with en suite shower room and an en suite super king set within the adjacent annexe.

Outside

A huge lawn to spread out on in the summer sun, a comfortable outdoor living room for sweet sundowners and a Mediterranean-inspired pool area with ancient olive and fig trees lining the borders; the grounds of this ancient hunting lodge are a dream come true. After breakfast, wind through the mown paths of Labyrinth’s wildflower meadow, taking a lazy rest from the heat beneath a fruit tree with a book, before wandering back to the house to take a refreshing dip in the outdoor swimming pool. On those brisk winter days, return from long country walks to warm through in the sauna before soaking in the hot tub, chilled fizz gently bubbling just within reach.

For Relaxation

Croquet on the lawn, an hour picking apples in the late autumn sun, late-night movie marathons in the depths of winter; Labyrinth has enough within its two acres to keep the whole family entertained throughout all of England’s four glorious seasons. Nearby, the South Downs National Park’s rolling hills offer shaded walks and long cycle routes, along with a sweeping coastline where soft-whip ice creams and fish and chips are best enjoyed with feet swinging over piers.

We just love to spend mornings gathered in the kitchen, the log fire roaring and the scent of freshly brewed coffee drifting through the house, as people slowly stretch from slumber. This room is definitely the heart of the house, where we always congregate as a family, no matter the time of day.
