Arcalia | Luxury Self-Catering Farmhouse | Blisland, Bodmin Moor

Arcalia

Blisland, Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, UK

Arcalia is a Grade-II listed 300-year-old farmhouse set in the ancient parish of Blisland within the wilds of Bodmin Moor. Lovingly re-imagined, this large family home has been brought into the modern day with a sprinkling of mod cons, a flourish of style and a hearty dose of Cornish hospitality. Along with its 14 acres of nature-filled gardens and an outdoor pool, Arcalia will create cherished memories of a time well spent.

Introduction

Nestled deep in the heart of rural North Cornwall, yet not far from the popular coastal village of “Doc Martin’s” Port Isaac, this spacious luxury home and its magical location offer tranquillity and rejuvenation to all those lucky enough to visit. Imagine Aga-cooked suppers after a day at the seaside and splashing about in the swimming pool until well past bedtime... there's no doubt you'll fall in head over heels love with this handsome farmhouse and wish your halcyon family holiday could last forever and a day.

Inside

The bunting-strewn sunroom will be a favourite spot for summer breakfasts, whilst during the colder months there is nothing better than curling up by one of the two roaring fires with a book from the library. Perfect for all guests in all seasons, each of Arcalia’s rooms has been elegantly put together to offer the ultimate in farmhouse comfort. Ready to welcome weary travellers, the luxurious bedrooms, comprised of a super king-size, a king-size and three twins, await on the first and second floors.

Outside

Wander down to the garden’s natural pond in the morning, coffee in hand, and look out for the resident wildlife. Here children will sit still for hours, eyes peeled for a sight of the heron and family of moorhens who regularly frequent the spot. When the sun has taken the edge of the morning chill, the heated pool and well-equipped pool house area will delight the whole family. The house is located on the outskirts of Blisland, but make sure you pop by the olde-worlde village green, CAMRA-awarded local pub and church which John Betjeman noted as “dazzling and amazing”.

From the owner

“As a family we have found a perfect haven at Arcalia. The stunning location offers the peace and tranquillity to fully relax and unwind, chilling out in the sunshine by the pool, or enjoying a winter walk through Shell Woods. It is perfectly located for the children to enjoy all activities at the coast too.”

From the owner

There has been a property on this site since 1540, but this house was probably built somewhere around 1700. The property was owned by the same family for over 300 years until it was lost as part of a gambling debt back in 1860.

The history of the house is clear when you arrive; there is an old mounting block in the front courtyard leading to the granite pathway that takes you to the front door, and these original granite flagstones follow through into the hallway and kitchen. Of particular interest is the 17th century plaster ceiling with central quatrefoil motif and moulded cornice in the sitting room. The original house and outbuildings have since been sympathetically updated to incorporate two adjoining barns.

We purchased the house in 2010 and in 2013 we worked closely with English Heritage and Listed Buildings to make the final improvements that can be enjoyed today. We wanted to keep the original charm of the farmhouse whilst ensuring the property could also provide facilities for modern day living. We feel that 'quirky' is the best way to describe it!

Both of our families have spent a wonderful week in this beautiful and immaculate house. Surfing, relaxing, cycling, walking, go-karting, but mostly just enjoying the surrounding land and the arrival of spring.

This house is incredible. The moment we got here we dove straight into the pool before enjoying a delicious meal in the beautiful breakfast room. Each room was cosy, comfy, and has lovely window seats for reading and having a quick nap after a long day. Not to mention looking at the stunning views over the 14 acres of land!

What a magical house. We loved our stay. It is so peaceful, relaxing and enchanting here. GCSE and A level revision went very well interspersed with beautiful woodland walks and delicious food. St Tudy Inn is fabulous, and Gidleigh Park is out of this world. Thank you so much.

From the seven-month old baby, to the 70+ grandparents, we all loved every second of our stay. This beautiful home was made even better by the incredible weather. A perfect week.

What can we say - An absolutely beautiful house, wonderfully located and beautifully equipped. Everything was just so. We loved the pool, we just wish we had another week here! The house is very well located for attractions; Port Issac, Fowey and Lanhydrock, Rock etc etc. I dont think it gets much better than sitting with a glass of something chilled, watching the sun go down and admiring the views from the comfy wooden chairs!
