Wrey Mist | Luxury Self-Catering Cottage | Lustleigh, Dartmoor

Wrey Mist

Lustleigh, Devon, UK

Bordering the pretty Dartmoor village of Lustleigh, this luxury cottage is fit for royalty - and rumour has it Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the Queen Mother, stayed at the farm before her marriage to King George VI. Flaunting timeless tranquillity in its original cobbles, thick granite walls and slate roof, Wrey Mist offers a unique self-catering retreat in Devon's wild heart.

Wrey Mist is an authentic bolthole studded within 100 private acres of Dartmoor’s wilderness near the charming villages of Lustleigh and North Bovey. Bearing the heraldic badge of the Prince of Wales above the main farmhouse door, this former stable turned luxury abode sits amongst a delightful old farmstead with romantic views of wooded river valleys and rolling countryside as far as the eye can see. With opportunities to explore en masse, spend the day discovering Devon’s untamed beauty until the fog rolls in, when Wrey Mist will be sure to lure couples home.

Encouraging long mornings and early nights, the king-size bed flaunts floor-to-ceiling views across the cobbled courtyard. Layered in crisp white linens, sumptuous throws and plumped pillows, couples will love nothing more than cocooning in this cosy love nest. Ready to face the day, head into the country kitchen for coffee and hot buttered crumpets. Post-wilderness walks, step across the en suite’s heated floor for a steamy shower, before hunkering down next to the roaring woodburner and retelling the local myths fired by Dartmoor’s mystical landscape.

Occupying an idyllic spot in 100 acres of grounds, a portcullis archway invites couples to lose themselves within Wrey Mist's bucolic beauty. Great British walks start immediately from the small boot room; in springtime, spot wild Dartmoor ponies grazing, weave through leafy woodland and enjoy gourmet picnics in buttercup-filled meadows. In colder months, pack a map and compass and tread through snow-cloaked fields. Watch a winter sunrise over the soaring granite tors, casting mysterious shadows over the landscape which inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s, The Hound of the Baskervilles.

From the owner

“We consider a very special part of our property to be the 100 acres of rolling Devon hills and woodland which guests are free to roam and which lead directly onto open moorland. We love the entrance to the courtyard, coming through the huge granite archway to relish the peace and tranquillity”

From the owner

The farmhouse as we know it now has stood facing south down the valley on Dartmoor for at least 600 years, although the historic hut circles within our 100 acres of land tell us those years were only just the beginning!

The earliest family we are aware of living here by name was in 1631. From 1751 to 1920, Wrey Mist was the home of the Wills family, and there has been a succession of owners since. A visit to Lustleigh Village Archive Room in the churchyard will provide more up to date records and even fascinating diary entries!

We arrived here from a neighbouring Devon valley as a family with our three children and black Labrador in 1997. We have stayed to celebrate and enjoy memorable birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and weddings - no home could have given us more.

The cottage and the surrounding area have a timeless, unchanging tranquillity which we hope you will experience too. There is plenty to see and do nearby, should you be able to tear yourself away from the cosy interiors and abundant grounds!

Guest Testimonials

We had a lovely time at Wrey Mist and exploring the South Hams area. The accommodation is excellent and had everything we needed and more, with the scrumptious hamper of food included! It did take a few tries to get used to the narrow lanes, but by the end of our stay, we were competent at "tight" reversing! A huge thank you to the owners for everything!

We were really pleased with our stay, the owners are very kind and incredibly welcoming. They walked up with us onto the cleave and it was great to chat about managing the moors and the work they do, so thank you! We thought Wrey Mist and the farm were delightful, we felt very welcome and at home, and so enjoyed being able to have lunch/supper outside, drinks on the patio and so on. This is a beautiful home and it is clear that they take huge pride in the farm, its history, and the countryside around it. We would definitely stay again.

Wrey Mist is beautifully appointed with everything you could want for a comfortable stay. We very much appreciated the generous welcome pack, which was full of lovely things to eat and drink. I was also very pleased to have a good quality mirror in the bedroom for applying makeup! The owners were wonderful and couldn´t have been more helpful. The perfect balance between availability for advice and lack of intrusion on privacy.
